The Cities and Biodiversity Outlook project (CBO) is the world’s first global analysis of how projected patterns of urban land expansion will impact biodiversity and crucial ecosystems. The CBO stems from Decision X/22 of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity’s COP10 in Nagoya, Japan, 2010, requesting the Executive Secretary of the Convention to prepare an assessment of the links and opportunities between urbanization and biodiversity. The Cities and Biodiversity Outlook highlights a wide range of successful initiatives by cities, local authorities and sub-national governments in both developed and developing countries. It demonstrates that there are strong incentives for cities, local governments, the business sector and other interested parties, to invest in natural solutions and to maintain vital ecosystem services. The scientific work is a partnership between the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, the Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC) and Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI).

The World Bank has published a report which examines the potential of African countries to improve and expand their tourism sector, and suggests that 33 of Sub Saharan Africa’s 48 countries currently have the capacity for tourism success through establishing strong political support for developing the industry and attracting increased private investment to help finance and sustain it. The report cites successful examples of countries including Cape Verde, Kenya, Mauritius, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania and others, who have simplified their tourism policies, liberalized air transport and diversified tourism while protecting their communities and environments, which created a positive investment climate for tourism development.

The UK’s Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has identified climate change impacts overseas as a threat to UK prosperity. The assessment comes as part of the government’s National Adaptation Programme, and looks at the impact of climate change overseas on UK trade and investment, food, health and well-being, energy and foreign policy. The report, undertaken by PWC, found that climate change impacts around the world could have a greater impact on the UK than from climate change at home. The main threats identified were: damage to physical and financial assets from extreme weather; increased frequency and urgency of humanitarian assistance; increased volatility in food prices; political or policy reactions affecting availability of food supplies; and increased demand for UK Government services by overseas territories and citizens abroad.

Collaborative research carried out by university and social landlord has found the Department of Work and Pensions may have significantly over-estimated the savings from the bedroom tax. The aims of this report are to explore: the extent to which key assumptions about claimant behaviour underlying the DWP’s final impact assessment of June 2012 are reflected in real data available from housing organisations since 1st April 2013, and the extent to which the DWP model contains all of the main factors likely to influence the level of Housing Benefit savings from the policy. It also discusses whether any other costs should be taken into account in assessing the overall cost impact of the policy.
