The Travel Foundation has developed a ‘next step generator’ so that travel companies can find out what their next step towards sustainability is. A ‘next step’ is generated depending upon answers to a series of questions in five key areas of sustainability: policy; staff training; environment; supply chain; and communications.

A solutions landscape for Yixing, China

As part of its Urban Infrastructure Initiative, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) has released its latest report on Yixing, a city of 1.25 million inhabitants which was selected as the pilot city for China. The Urban Infrastructure Initiative was launched by the WBCSD in 2010 to provide an interdisciplinary team of experts from industry who would work with city officials to assist with infrastructure development in the city. The report outlines wide-ranging solutions, covering energy and transport, integrated under an overall approach to urban planning in the city. Two issues were singled out for immediate action on sustainable urban planning: rational land use and appropriate urban structure; and protected ecological and cultural assets through compact mixed-use urban design and green infrastructure.
Euston Area Plan

The Mayor of London has launched a consultation on the future redevelopment of Euston station, NW1, and its surrounding area. In response to the current proposal from government for HS2, the Euston Area Plan is being prepared to help shape development in this part of the capital over the next 15 to 20 years. Comments are requested by 7 October 2013.
Mauritius: National Climate Change Adaptation Policy Framework

The National Climate Change Adaptation Policy Framework (NCCAPF) highlights the importance of adaptation to Mauritius, forecasting that half of the islands’ beaches could disappear by the middle of the century. Such an event would be disastrous for both coastal ecosystems and for the economic prosperity of the island, which relies heavily on tourism. The NCCAPF also suggests that water scarcity is likely to increase, predicting a 13% reduction in island water resources by 2050.

Cities Today is the leading magazine on sustainable development of cities. PFD launched the magazine as United Cities in 2010 at the Third UCLG World Congress of Mayors and Local Governments in Mexico City and at the Mayors’ World Summit on Climate. Having worked on publications focusing on urban development for the World Bank, UN-HABITAT, the Inter-American Development Bank and the Asian Development Bank, PFD’s editorial team saw the opportunity to launch the first global publication dedicated to city leaders. Bringing together the experience of the multilateral sector with that of the private sector and the local governments themselves, the magazine focuses on the challenges and solutions for city leaders and local governments. Analysis, case studies and features cover transport, energy, construction, public safety, infrastructure, planning, finance, and the use of Information and Communication Technology in urban development and management. The magazine was rebranded as Cities Today in 2012 to reflect that the magazine was being produced with a new and diverse editorial board that includes not only members of UCLG but also all of the key intergovernmental agencies and city associations active in urban development.

This paper provides an overview of the construction market in Asia midway through 2013. It reviews industry activity levels in 2012 and provides near and longer term forecasts for construction activity by region, country and city. The findings are based on analysis of sector statistics combined with the results of an in-house market sentiment survey.
Green Lease Toolkit

The Better Building Partnership (BBP), a collaboration of seventeen of the leading commercial property owners in the UK, has updated its guidance on the use of green leases for commercial property. This guidance are non-prescriptive, helping owners and occupiers to agree carbon, energy, waste and water reduction strategies which best fit with the circumstances of individual properties. With the help of this Toolkit it is possible for any owner or occupier to positively engage in developing practical ways to effect significant positive change, ultimately accelerating the process of making the UK’s existing commercial properties more sustainable.
Study into the operation of Planning Committees in Wales

The RTPI commissioned Fortismere Associates with Arup to undertake research into the operation of planning committees in Wales. This research has been undertaken to provide evidence on the efficiency and effectiveness of planning committees and to make recommendations for change in a report to Welsh Ministers.
