The UN Division for Sustainable Development (DSD), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), has announced the launch of the Sustainable Transport Action Network as part of its Sustainable Development Knowledge Platform. The Action Network was set up to address the need for sustainable transport that provides access to goods and services in support of economic and social development whilst minimizing the negative environmental, social and economic impacts of a continually expanding transport sector.

Citizen Commitment to Sustainability 2012-2022 for a more equitable, prosperous and self-sufficient Barcelona

In 1995 Barcelona City Council signed the Aalborg Charter, committing it to working in accordance with sustainable development principles. Signing the document was the first step in building a Local Agenda 21 roadmap. Following an extensive consultation process, Barcelona defined its own Agenda 21 in Citizen Commitment to Sustainability 2002-2012, a document which defined principles, objectives and lines of action to move towards a better city. The city has now produced an updated version for the period 2012 – 2022, renewing citizen commitment for the coming decade.

The Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership has published its Strategy for Growth. The Strategy promises a spatial plan by the end of the year and a public sector land audit focused on bringing derelict land back into use. The strategy covers the period up to 2020 and aims to increase private-sector jobs by 100,000, increase GVA by £8.25bn and improve skills and performance.

Climate adaptation research in a larger Europe: an analysis at national scale

INFOBASE is an online database resource containing information about climate and climate adaptation research projects in countries and regions of Europe. While it only includes projects that concluded after 2005, by 2014 it will have a decade’s worth of climate research project information. A preliminary report on the INFOBASE contents (to December 2013) has just been released, and a more complete report will follow in 2014. Analysis of its contents will provide a better understanding of how climate adaptation research has evolved over the last decade.
