Zero carbon strategies for tomorrow’s new homes

The UK Government has set out an ambitious plan for all new homes to be zero carbon from 2016. This guide, published by the Zero Carbon Hub, uses newly built housing schemes to illustrate the approaches that a house builder could take to meet the expected 2016 zero carbon requirements. It provides specification details allowing each scheme to be categorised as a Balanced, Extreme Fabric or Extreme Low Carbon Technology approach.

The reshaping of retail

The total number of shops in the UK will fall by more than 10% by the end of the decade, according to a report commissioned by Hammerson from retail consultant Conlumino. The report finds that pressures on spending, and the continuing rise of multi-channel retail will cause floorspace to shrink by 5.7% to 527m sq ft by 2020. Retail spending, however, is likely to increase in the period to 2022, as the twin influences of smartphones and an ageing population exert themselves over the direction of sales growth.

Cycle City Ambition Grants

On 30 January 2013, the Minister, Norman Baker, announced $42 million of investment in cycling which would comprise of two elements – an urban element and an element for rural areas covered by a national park. The cycle city ambition grants guidance details the scope of the fund, the assessment criteria and the application process. The application form and pro forma templates are both required when submitting a bid for cycle city ambition grant funding.

REAL CORP conferences have been held annually since 1996. About 500 experts from around the world from the fields of urban planning, transport planning, information and communication technologies, architecture, social and environmental sciences, real estate, GIS, surveying, remote sensing and more meet to discuss current tasks and topics on urban planning, regional development and information society in an international and extremely interdisciplinary conference. The 2013 conference, to be held in Rome on 20-23 May 20123 will explore the relationship between time and space, and how the planning practise and theory relates itself to this complex synergy. The Cabe team at the Design Council, the Landscape Institute, the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and the Royal Institute of Architects (RIBA) have joined forces to produce an update to the widely acknowledged, industry standard best practice delivering Design Review, Design Review: Principles and Practice. The publication of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) in 2012 re-iterated and reinforced the role of Design Review in ensuring high standards of design. The new guide lines clearly sets out the updated 10 principles that underpin the independent and effective delivery of the process and provides authoritative advice for Design Review panels of all types to help them operate in a consistent way and to uphold the quality of the independent, expert advice that they provide.
