The Environmental Industries Commission has published a major industry-led review into the future of the Government’s flagship environmental policy, the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), following an in-depth, industry-wide research including detailed policy workshops, a cross-industry survey and one-to-one interviews with both CRC participants and carbon management consultants from the public and private sectors. The report argues for a longer term future for a management and allowance system, within the context of the challenges and barriers to energy efficiency which the CRC was originally developed to address.

This report opens with a short overview of the critical role for cities in responding to climate change followed by an outline of climate ‘vulnerability’ and ‘resilience’ in an urban context. It identifies  areas and knowledge gaps for four key topics: risk and uncertainty; governance; people, and place. For each topic, areas for more detailed consideration in future URBAN-NEXUS activities are suggested.

An Annex of case studies is also available. Examples of case studies and research are presented throughout the report to illustrate relevant sections. Summaries of all of the information received on case studies and partnership initiatives are presented in this annex.

The synthesis report informed discussions at the first URBAN-NEXUS Dialogue cafe held in Glasgow, 29-30 May 2012. A follow-up report from this event is available online here.

According to the American Express Meetings & Events 2013 Global Meetings Forecast (“the Forecast”), Asia Pacific, with its relatively strong economy, is likely to see the strongest growth among regions in both spending and the number of meetings. In North America, economic uncertainty is expected to keep those categories relatively flat, while Europe will likely experience declines as it continues to face a currency crisis and, due to political instability in some markets, Central/South America is also expected to see slight declines overall, especially in spend.
