In our programmes we will be bringing our audience up to speed with the value that FM can create and how it can free up organisations to focus on their core strengths. We will define how FM encompasses the utilities that make a building work, such as energy and security, and the services that are needed to support a workforce. The Dutch Advisory Council for the Environment and Infrastructure (RLI) has chosen the decarbonisation of the transport sector as a central topic for the annual conference of the network of European Environmental and Sustainable Development Advisory Councils (EEAC), held in Rotterdam on 11 October 2012. As part of the preparation for this conference, the RLI commissioned CE Delft to carry out a study on the national policies for the decarbonisation of transport. This study provides an overview of the main trends regarding transport in EU Member States as well as an in-depth analysis of relevant policies. Both existing policies and national studies and visions on long term decarbonisation strategies have been assessed. The analysis was based on various EU wide data sets from EEA, the European Commission and other stakeholders and also a literature review. Furthermore more detailed data on existing and planned policies has been gathered for ten selected Member States with the support of national experts.

Learning about surviving disasters, a study funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), has resulted in a unique bank of research data which provides insights into what makes an effective community response at this critical time. Community responses are key to helping children and young people who survive major natural disasters. The study, led by Professor Lena Dominelli of Durham University, was conducted in Sri Lanka in 12 villages recovering from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The research involved people and groups who responded to the needs of these villages after the tsunami struck and throughout the years after – including volunteers and international organisations funding humanitarian aid, students, and staff from universities.
