A weekend of Open Door events inviting members of the public to visit working construction sites is being organised for the autumn by the UK Contractors Group (UKCG), the Industry Training Board and Sector Skills Council, CITB-ConstructionSkills, the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Considerate Constructors Scheme. The collaborative initiative is the first of its kind for the sector and intends to raise the profile of the industry, challenge stereotypes and encourage greater engagement with the public and local communities to attract talent into the industry.
The events will provide a unique opportunity for members of the public to witness first-hand the scale and complexity of major construction developments and also demonstrate an industry-wide commitment to welcoming a wider, more diverse range of talent into the sector.

This report from the Policy Exchange examines all of the options for increasing airport capacity in the UK and concludes that the best option would be to place four runways immediately west of the current Heathrow site. This would double the existing capacity to 130 million passengers, cementing it as Europe’s premier hub. It also makes a number of recommendations to reduce noise pollution.

This report shows that tackling the global climate crisis would reap significant economic benefits for major economies and poor nations alike. The report was commissioned by 20 governments and authored by DARA, an humanitarian and development research organisation, and Climate Vulnerable Forum, an international cooperation group for coordination, advocacy and knowledge-building. The study incorporates significantly updated and revised estimates of losses linked to climate change and presents a sobering picture. The findings point to unprecedented harm to human society and current economic development that will increasingly restrain future growth.

The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), in conjunction with software specialists Idox, have launched a pilot website for the Map for England which will be live until 31 December 2012. The RTPI commissioned a study as part of their Map for England campaign which showed that there are many benefits to joining up different sources of policy information, which would help to coordinate infrastructure planning and help to boost growth, whilst being more transparent and saving time and money to many organisations and local communities. The Map for England aims to help organisations visualise the impact of some of the existing policies and programmes. The RTPI would welcome feedback on this resource.

The University of Groningen has more than 5,000 employees and around 28,000 students. So many students means a considerable volume of questions, particularly at the beginning of the academic year. In 2009, the university opted for multi-channel customer service delivery in the cloud to resolve the challenge of an over-stretched student information services resource delivering inconsistent answers to information requests and peak time overloads. Now, three years on, with the vast majority of students opting to have their questions answered digitally in their own time and University staff having more time available to deal with more complicated requests, the same solution has been deployed across the rest of the organisation including the HR department responding to internal staff questions. This case study is now serving as an example in the teaching sector and serving as a guide for other educational institutions throughout Holland. Further details are available online.
