Recognising the intrinsic value of logistics to the UK economy, the Government has recently reviewed the sector and it is putting in place a series of measures that will both encourage growth and remove barriers to future expansion. One of the Government’s main areas of interest is the promotion of rail freight and the development of a network of Strategic Rail Freight Interchanges (SRFI). It is anticipated that this new approach will address the expected increase in freight transport and help meet the demand for a low carbon logistics industry. This note focuses on the elements that apply specifically to rail freight and the future development of SRFIs.

This report from the Institute for Public Policy Research aims to debunk claims from a group of more than 100 MPs that wind power is not an effective technology. It shows that the UK has the greatest potential for wind power of any European country, both onshore and offshore and that the global market for low carbon technologies is continuing to grow rapidly. However, it argues that false claims about wind power technology are putting this potential at risk and could result in higher energy bills for consumers.
