A new national report from the Campaign to Protect Rural England finds that despite their critical importance to the health of our high streets, local economies and much loved landscapes, local food networks are under-recognised and poorly supported. Health and safety teaching should be integrated into design projects to be most effective, rather than taught as an abstract set of rules in isolation, according to new research published into the teaching of health and safety to undergraduate students of architecture. The report was produced on behalf of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) by the University of Sheffield.

This research analyses the growth of Housing Benefit claimants numbers in Great Britain in 2010 and 2011. Particular attention is paid to the rapid growth in the number of in-work Housing Benefit claimants. The research also provides a brief review of the factors that could be leading to a change in the financial position of these households which means that they are claiming Housing Benefit to help cover their housing costs.

Collaboration between The Lancet and University College London, UK, has resulted in the second UCL Lancet Commission report. The report analyses how health outcomes are part of the complexity of urban processes, drawing attention to the part that urban planning can and should play in delivering health improvements through reshaping the urban fabric of our cities.

Revised guidance on the selling of vacant social housing homes has been published by the Homes and Communities Agency. It provides guidance on the revised procedures for gaining the Regulator’s consent to the disposal of social housing and other land, and introduces changes to the process by which the Regulator will approve programmes of disposals.

Guide to the Implementation of Project Bank Accounts (PBAs) In Construction for Government Clients

The Project Bank Account (PBA) User Group has developed a guide which provides clients procuring construction work with information on introducing PBAs on projects, which will speed cash flow through the supply chain. The development of the guide follows the Government Construction Board’s decision that Government should move to a position where PBAs are adopted as the default position unless there are compelling reasons to do otherwise. The forthcoming report of the Standards and Lean Supply Chain Task Group recommends that the impacts of PBAs are monitored over time, as the programme is rolled out. This report, due for publication in July, is also expected to make recommendations around the value proposition and health and safety.

This paper from the Overseas Development Institute argues that despite significant overlaps between climate change and development they are rarely linked through policy. It also sets out to explain why reconciling the two agendas has been so difficult at a practical level, and suggests how Rio+20 could start to bridge the gaps between the two.
