This review undertaken by TfL Planning attempts to bring together analysis of a range of different travel trends that have been observed in London in recent years, and to understand what has caused them and how they interrelate. Given that there are so many factors that can influence travel demand, the review does not claim to prove all of the reasons why the trends that have developed over the past two decades have been observed. Rather, it aims to offer a plausible explanation for the trends in travel demand based on a description of some of the major factors that have had an influence. A series of supplementary reports will be published to explore particular aspects of the topics covered in more detail than can be covered here.

This report from the Centre for Cities finds that in order to support agglomeration in our largest cities, the Department for Transport should look to improve transport links within the largest cities outside London to reduce the costs of commuting into their city centres. Public transport is much less well developed in all of these cities, and given the shifting geography of jobs, this should be seen as a priority by both local and national government.

Embodied energy is the amount of energy consumed to extract, refine, process, transport and fabricate a material. It is often measured from cradle to (factory) gate, or cradle to site (of use). Likewise, embodied carbon footprint is the amount of carbon (CO2 or CO2e emission) to produce a material. The Inventory of Carbon and Energy (also know as the ICE database) is a free database for building materials. The ICE database is available as a a hard copy book version available from BSRIA, or as a free download, in excel format, by subscribing to the Circular Ecology mailing list.

To celebrate the launch of their new Tourism, Hospitality & Events Social Media sites, publishers Taylor & Frances have assembled a collection of recent articles that explore the relationship between tourism and social media. Whereas travel was previously considered an opportunity to escape the technological world, the rise in mobile devices has meant that tourists are increasingly embracing technology to share their exploits and enhance their travelling experience. In turn, tourism agencies have been quick to utilise this technology in promoting their brand through online marketing and devising ways to encourage users to act as destination ambassadors on their behalf. Access is free until 31 December 2014.
