Understanding the existing character and local context of a place is essential to an appreciation of how a place can and should develop in the future, whether that is to protect important elements crucial to an area’s distinctive sense of place or identifying those elements that should be enhanced through managed change. This guidance from the Greater London Authority sets out an approach and process to help understand the character and context of a place so that its results can inform the planning and design process, and guide change in way which is responsive to individual places and locations.

The latest annual report from the Institute of Civil Engineers grades the UK’s transport, energy, flood, waste and water networks from A to E. It highlights the progress since 2010 in improving infrastructure and positioning it as a core enabler of economic growth, but suggests more needed to be done if we are to have world class infrastructure, in particular on the issue of resiliency given its impact on the economy and the major challenges ahead. This was highlighted by the “at risk” or “requires attention” grades for flood management, energy and local transport networks, due to the narrowing gap between supply and demand for energy, inadequate resilience to flooding and the decline in maintenance of both flood defences and local roads following investment cuts.

European Mobility Week is the most widespread campaign on sustainable mobility in the world. It takes place every year from 16 to 22 September. The aim of the campaign is to encourage European local authorities to introduce and promote sustainable transport measures and to invite people to try out alternatives to car use. The aim of these thematic guidelines is to provide local European Mobility Week coordinators with background information on this theme and inspiration for suitable campaign activities. European Mobility Week encourages local authorities to reallocate and redesign streets and public spaces in favour of people. These guidelines provide concrete ideas on how to implement this and will also help local European Mobility Week coordinators to develop activities that match the criteria of the prestigious European Mobility Week Award.
