RIBA and Arup present a report which shows how data on how people use cities and their services could revolutionise the way we design and plan our built environment. Through a series of case studies from around the world and insights from key experts, the report offers practitioners four main approaches to working with data and new technology to harness the wealth of opportunity big data presents. The report provides a starting point to smart architecture and planning, but there is further work to be done to roll this approach out. This begins with three recommendations to the UK Government to take place making into the digital age, and to extend the economic, social and environmental benefits of big data to the spatial disciplines of planning and design.

A report published by Veolia Environnement and the London School of Economics envisages the home of the future with nanoscopic robots sorting materials, self-cleaning bathrooms and ultrasonic baths. However it also contains stark warnings with two contrasting visions of urban living in 2050.

e-architect is one of the world’s largest architecture websites with around 17,000 pages. The principal difference between e-architect and other architecture sites is that it does not just carry news: on e-architect buildings can be searched by country, city or by type. You can also search for buildings by architect. The website features building news, events, competitions, photos, jobs, awards and products., and a range of building types from houses to skyscrapers, plus major landscape and interior projects.
The Permitted Development (Basements) Bill 2013-14

A Bill to regulate the construction of new basements and the extension of existing ones, received its first reading in the Commons on the 12 November 2013. The Bill was introduced by Karen Buck, MP for Westminster North, as a Private Members Bill. The Bill is expected to have its second reading debate on the 28 February 2014.

This report provides a starting point to smart architecture and planning, but there is further work to be done to roll this approach out. Three recommendations are made for the UK Government to take place making into the digital age, and to extend the economic, social and environmental benefits of big data to the spatial disciplines of planning and design. This paper identifies four main approaches to working with data for architects, urban designers and planners: using data to help designers meet user needs; experimentation and modelling using data; analysing data to improve local and national policy making and implementation; and using data to improve transparency to speed up development processes.

Holder Mathias designs homes for individuals, giving them the ability to personalise their own space for their preferred way of living. For the past twenty years they have also been involved with the design for leisure, retail, health and fitness. This knowledge influences the current thinking for the private rented sector (PRS), helping to reinforce tenant experience and brand identity. Holder Mathias can help clients design, develop and build homes that ‘work’ for the new generation. Contemporary IT has provided the PRS tenant with direct links to a host of services, from dealing with a blocked sink to ordering a pizza. The projects displayed in this exhibition demonstrate different approaches to residential design that have been developed by Holder Mathias Architects. The designs, which include communal facilities and services, illustrate how London could develop a more aspirational PRS product. The exhibition runs at the Building Centre until 28 November 2013.

The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has announced a merger with the Interior Design Association (IDA). The IDA, the business association for designers working in the commercial sector, will be incorporated into the BIID, the Government-recognised professional institute for the interiors sector. This significant merger will create one leading body for interior design that will set national professional standards, promote learning and debate and champion the value of interior design on the national and international stage.
