Birmingham Airport is making a bid to become as big as London’s Heathrow and potentially the busiest aviation hub in the world. Birmingham Airport’s response to the Government’s Draft Aviation Policy Framework argues that making the best use of capacity at existing airports should be the Government’s number one short-term policy priority.

The 69th IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit provided an opportunity for the air transport industry to discusses its most important issues, including safety, environment, distribution and financial sustainability, and the growth of the industry in Africa. Material from the conference, including fact sheets, videos and presentations, is available online. IATA’s latest annual review is also available, providing a report on the successes, issues and state of commercial air transport.

A bigger hub airport at either Heathrow, Stansted or in the Thames Estuary is needed to meet Britain’s aviation needs, according to a new report by the Independent Transport Commission (ITC). It argues that good aviation connectivity is “crucial” for the British economy and jobs, but the country faces capacity constraints in both long-haul and short-haul travel.

The House of Commons Transport Select Committee has published the findings of its inquiry into the government’s aviation strategy. The Committee rejects calls for a new hub airport east of London and urges the Government to permit the expansion of Heathrow where a third runway is long overdue. The Committee looked closely at the three main options by which the UK could increase its hub airport capacity.

The London Assembly Transport Committee has published the findings of an investigation involving airlines, environmentalists, business leaders and other aviation experts. The report, which feeds into the debate on need for a hub airport, suggests existing airport capacity in London, including at Heathrow and Gatwick airports, could be used more effectively.

Sustainable Aviation has launched the industry’s first Noise Road-Map, demonstrating how noise from UK aviation will not increase despite a near doubling in flights over the next 40 years. This is achieved through the development and introduction of quieter aircraft alongside the implementation of better operating procedures and improved land-use planning. Going forwards, signatories to Sustainable Aviation will use this Road-Map as a toolkit in refining their own plans to manage noise.
