This Thematic Research Summary (TRS) has been produced as a part of the activities of the Transport Research and Innovation Portal (TRIP) project. The purpose of TRIP is to collect, structure, analyse and disseminate the results of EU-supported transport research and research financed nationally in the European Research Area and selected global research programmes. The Thematic Research Summaries provide a structured guide to the results of research projects carried out mainly at EU level, either as part of a framework programme or as a study commissioned by the European Commission. These summaries are intended for policy makers at European, national and local levels, stakeholders and researchers. This TRS presents an overview of EU-funded research on traffic and transport management for all modes, covering both freight and passenger transport. The scope of the topic includes influencing the way in which existing transport systems and infrastructure are used and new approaches to the management and control of traffic.

The exponential growth in international tourism arrivals seen over recent decades would not have been possible without the innovation and expansion of the air transport industry, which today accounts for more than half of cross-border tourist arrivals worldwide. Over the next twenty years, growth in international arrivals is forecaste at 3.3% annually. However, for this to happen, policy makers, Official Tourism Organizations, airlines, airports and tourism service providers will have to develop and intensify their relations. This report, published by the World Tourism Organization, outlines how such partnerships are taking shape around the world.

This paper considers the remit of the Davies Commission, set up to identify and recommend to government options for maintaining the UK’s status as a global aviation hub, and the work programme for the Mayor’s new aviation policy unit. Given that the Mayor of London has a very strong stance on aviation policy, this report also invites Leaders to agree that London Councils should develop a set of principles on aviation policy which could be used to inform London Councils’ interactions with the Mayor of London and the Davies Commission. This set of principles would build on the work that London Councils undertook on this previously.

Heathrow Airport has published a new report on the importance of London being served by a single hub airport. The report was produced in the context of the recently commenced Davies Commission into airport capacity options. The study, carried out by frontier Economics examined the impact of lack of connectivity with all destinations not served from London but served from another European hub. It considered both the impact of connecting to new countries and deepening connections through flights to more destinations within a country and increasing flight frequencies to existing destinations.
