In this guide, academic and professional knowledge regarding the joint application of Lean and BIM has been compiled for the first time. The information is based on up-to-date experiences and knowledge regarding the topic, gained by pioneering organisations in different countries. The guide contains a clear description on the links between Lean and BIM, and how these can be marshalled to provide a range of benefits in an incremental manner. It provides specific advice for different parties of a construction project and for different project stages, as well as references to the wider literature.

Results from the annual industry-wide BIM survey, undertaken by NBS, have provided the most comprehensive and up to date picture of BIM (Building Information Modelling) implementation within the UK’s construction industry. Now in its third year, the NBS National BIM Survey was conducted between December 2012 and February 2013 and received a record response. More than 1,350 professionals took part, representing a range of business sizes and disciplines from across the industry including architecture, engineering and surveying, making this the most comprehensive piece of research into BIM to be undertaken in the UK.

Building Information Modelling – an introduction for housebuilders

Many housebuilders are missing a “money saving opportunity” by not investing in Building Information Modelling (BIM), according to a report from the NHBC Foundation. The report shows that 89% of the 18 major housebuilders who NHBC surveyed had not heard of BIM or had no plans to use it.

As part of the Birmingham City University’s £180 million investment in its estate, two new buildings are currently being completed to expand capacity of the city centre campus. This case study looks at the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) on this project (including technical details), its challenges and successes, and lessons learned.
