Cities across the world have started recognising the need to address urban climate vulnerabilities. In Asia, the role of the Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN), a nine-year initiative (2008-2017) supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, has been significant. Over the years, ACCCRN has worked in ten cities in four Asian countries (India, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam) on developing and demonstrating effective processes and practices for addressing urban climate vulnerabilities. This Working Paper aims to document and analyse the several methodologies adopted in the seven Indian ACCCRN cities: Surat, Indore, Gorakhpur, Shimla, Bhubaneswar, Mysore, Guwahati. The paper analyses these methodologies and the overall process adopted in each of these cities for its potential for replication in other cities in India, and brings out the inherent challenges, gaps and opportunities in achieving this.

Immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is key to limit the risk that global temperature rise will exceed 2° C, according to this report from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).  The report shows that delaying near-term actions to narrow the greenhouse gas emissions gap by 2020 considerably decreases the chances of keeping global temperature rise below 2°C and exacerbates mitigation challenges after 2020.

It explores the extent to which decisions about the land are helping the country to prepare for climate change.

As supply chains become increasingly complex and demand for time-sensitive goods and services continues to increase supply chains are becoming more vulnerable to disruption from the impacts of climate change. In light of this the Environment Agency’s ‘Climate Ready Support Service’ has developed a five step framework to help businesses understand and manage the risks that severe weather and our changing climate present to the increasingly complex supply chains of UK companies.

The climate change-sustainable development nexus: A proposal for convergence

This  thesis  is  founded  on  the  proposition  that  climate  change  and  sustainable development are inextricably linked with each other and form a “nexus” that should be understood in a pragmatic and holistic way.  Accordingly, the climate change “problem” cannot be adequately addressed in “silos” or by traditional output control techniques but instead should be viewed as a multidimensional challenge that calls for transformative change in the world energy sector in light of the wider contexts of sustainability and social equity.  This thesis observes that with the  emergence of a post-2015 development agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the United  Nations, the world is at or  is  fast  approaching  an  inflection  point  in  global  development.  While efforts  to improve the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process are laudable, this thesis argues for a transformative approach to converge international collective action on climate change with the broader frameworks of global sustainable development  processes. This thesis makes a proposal for the convergence and integration of the UNFCCC and  sustainable development work streams, and suggests that China consider taking a leadership role under the broad aspirational goal of building “eco-civilization”.
