Adaptation to climate change in Dhaka

This video highlights research being undertaken by University College London  to understand how the impacts of climate change in Bangladesh are going to affect the urban poor in the city of Dhaka. Secondly, the study assess how plans for adaptation at the local (neighbourhood level) will affect vulnerability. The research looks at impacts from a vulnerability perspective; understanding who and what is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and climate vulnerability as well as what can be done to address these vulnerabilities. The emphasis is on physical environment and the aspects contributing to adaptation in built environment.

West African agriculture and climate change

This new book provides a framework of up-to-date scientific information on agro-ecosystems both at regional and country specific level. A collaboration between the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development (CORAF/WECARD), and the CGIAR Research Programme on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), the book provides climate data and analysis on 11 of the 16 countries which make up West Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.

European Commission action on adaptation to climate change

The European Commission yesterday presented a package consisting of two parts: The EU strategy on adaptation to climate change sets out a framework and mechanisms for taking the EU’s preparedness for current and future climate impacts to a new level; and, in a related measure, the Commission also adopted a Green Paper on insurance in the context of natural and man-made disasters.

Defra policy evidence plans

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has produced a series of evidence plans for different policy areas which make significant use of formal evidence, including plans for water availability and quality; waste and resources; sustainable economy; sustainable land and farming; landscape and outdoor recreation; flood and coastal erosion risk management; biodiversity and ecosystems; atmosphere and local environment; and climate change. The evidence plans will be used to help ensure the link between evidence and policy development and implementation. The evidence plans set out evidence needs for a 5 year timeframe and will be updated roughly annually to reflect any major changes in evidence needs as a result of changing policy.

India represented 8% of the increase in global energy-related CO2 emissions between 2000 and 2010 according to a report by US based Climate Policy Initiative (CPI). In contrast, China represented a whopping 68% of the increase in global CO2 emissions. The study claims to have analysed the impact of three decades of implementation of various kinds of policies to curb climate change in India, China, Brazil, the EU, and the US. It says that impact of these policies has accelerated despite an impasse in international climate negotiations.

Synthesis report on the implementation of the framework for capacity-building in developing countries

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat has released a report to support the Subsidiary Body for Implementation’s (SBI) annual monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of the framework for capacity-building in developing countries. The report features sections on the overview of information reported by parties; capacity building activities under the Kyoto Protocol; and capacity building activities undertaken by UN organizations and other institutions. It contains information identified taking into account developing countries’ needs and priorities for capacity building, as well as examples of good practices collected from national communications.
