CIB 2013 World Building Congress, Construction and Society. Brisbane, 5-9 May 2013

These are the 13 Proceedings from papers from the designated sessions that took place as part of the CIB World Building Congress, in Brisbane on 5-9 May 2013, under the responsibility of various CIB Task Groups and Commissions. For one event, several groups decided to merge together under the title “Architectural Management & IDDS; Improving Societal Performance of Architectural Design through Better Collaboration and Integration with the Aid of Information Technology and Knowledge Management.” This stream of the congress was organised on behalf of the following CIB Commissions: CIB W078 – Information Technology for Construction; CIB W096 – Architectural Management; CIB W102 – Information & Knowledge Management in Building; CIB’s priority theme Integrated Design and Delivery Solutions (IDDS). Other proceedings are available for: Disasters and the built environment; Energy and the built environment; Construction industry economics; Organisation and management of construction; Facilities management and maintenance; Education in the built environment; Procurement systems; Safety and health in construction; Construction in developing countries; Law and dispute resolution; Smart and sustainable built environments; Clients and users in construction.

Approved Document L – Conservation of fuel and power

The Department for Communities and Local Government has published new 2013 versions of ADL1A, ADL2A, and Domestic and Non Domestic Compliance Guides. It has also published a circular which sets out and explains the approval and publication of the: new 2013 Approved Documents L1A and L2A; amendments to the 2010 Approved Documents L1B and L2B; new domestic building services compliance guide; and new non-domestic building services compliance guide. The changes in the approved documents and compliance guides comes into effect as of 6 April 2014.

NBS National Construction Contracts and Law Survey 2013

A survey of the UK construction industry by NBS, part of RIBA Enterprises, has revealed an increase in the number of disputes over the last 12 months. Undertaken with the help of the membership of more than 20 industry bodies, the survey of more than 1,000, clients, contractors and consultants found that 30% had been involved in one or more contract entering into dispute in the last 12 months compared to 24% in the previous year, with 7% reporting that they had been involved in three or more disputes.

Middle East major construction programmes: Mitigating the delivery risk

The new report by the global built asset consultancy EC Harris found that across the Gulf Cooperation Council region (GCC), in excess of 117 major programmes, defined as programmes totalling more than USD$1 billion and delivered in a relatively short period of time, are planned for completion by 2030 costing more than $1 trillion.  However, the completion of these ambitious development plans come with a number of risks that could result in programme failure for some.

NHBC Standards 2014

The 2014 edition of the NHBC Standards comes into effect for every NHBC registered home whose foundations are begun on or after 1 January 2014. The Standards are the technical manual for NHBC registered builders with sections covering the design, material specification and sitework for each part of the build process.  They provide the technical benchmark for all newly-built homes registered with NHBC. Major changes include mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.
