Building pathology provides a systematic scientific approach to discovering what has gone wrong in a failed building. The CIB Building Pathology Commission is basically concerned with learning from past and current building pathologies and encouraging the systematic application of that knowledge to the design, construction and management of buildings. This report aims to be a concise document that binds a set of in-depth articles. A short introduction is provided in Chapter 1 to present the CIB W086 – Building Pathology Commission and to summarise its recent activities. Chapter 2 deals with building pathology and costs, while Chapter 3 presents the research methodology. Chapter 4 describes the information dissemination, and Chapter 5 is devoted to special case studies. Chapter 6 and 7 provide, respectively, the most important conclusions and the lists of reference documents.

The objective is to spread best practices, limit pressures on global energy supply, improve energy security, and contribute to environmental sustainability. In the UK the industry has been slowly moving towards collaboration, and away from the traditional ‘adversarial’ (and inherently inefficient) approach to construction, with major government reports advocating it (e.g. the Latham and Egan reports), but the industry hasn’t really embraced the concept. Until now – the rise of BIM with all its apparent benefits for all parties has finally galvanized us into action. This article looks at how this is panning out in the UK, though much of what is happening has international dimensions, including BIM itself.

The 2013 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, by architect Sou Fujimoto, is a metallic mesh of 27,000 bits of steel joined together to give the impression of a light, cloud-like structure. This video programme includes a talk to the AECOM engineers that worked alongside Fujimoto to help realise his design. We learn why the architect’s original designs had to be rapidly rationalised and how an exceedingly tight schedule ultimately dictated the final design and how it was built.
