The Crossrail Graduate Scheme is a brand new programme for 2013 offering graduate engineers the opportunity to play a key role in Europe’s largest tunnelling and underground construction project. The scheme will start with an intake of eight graduates each year for the next four years. For successful applicants, the programme lasts for two years during which you will undertake four structured placements whilst working towards your professional chartered status.

The BSRIA Briefing is an annual building services event of presentations and Q&As with leading industry speakers. This year’s Briefing addressed the cloud of confusion that faces our sector in understanding what the energy mix is going to look like in the future so that professionals can offer solutions that meet today’s immediate economic as well as regulatory requirements. Consideration was given to the energy needs upon which forthcoming commercial investment and development depends, whilst recognising that structures will not only be expected to perform successfully over several decades, but also improve social conditions and effectively protect the environment. This 48-hour virtual design collaboration, held on 27-29 November 2012. New technology is revolutionising the way buildings are designed and how the public can be engaged in the process. By using the power of collaborative working in the cloud and international developments in interoperability, Build Qatar Live shows the power of these new paradigms for architecture, engineering, planning and construction. Through cloud-based collaboration the event was open to worldwide participation. A specially chosen and internationally known site in Qatar was announced, along with a brief for a significant multi-use development.  All the key information was published in interoperable formats, and teams were free to exploit any interoperable technology and to add updates to a public collaboration-site  The efforts of the BIM Academy team, which was declared overall winner, are available online.

Builders and the Games: Documentary about building workers and the Stratford Olympic Park

Shot between 2007 and 2012 on and around the Olympic Park and in colleges of construction, the film makers explore the impact of this big public project and ask whether there will be a legacy for construction workers. The DVD also includes four short films by new film makers: The Artist and the plumber: a portrait of a young woman sculptor who earns her living as a plumber; Cricklewood Craic: Impressions of a community of Irish construction workers in North London; The Carpenter: A day in the life of a worker who came to the UK from Eastern Europe; Pudding Mill Lane: People arrive for work at the Stratford Olympic Park. The DVD costs £7 for individuals and £22 for institutions.
