Delivering a low-energy building: Making quality commonplace

The University of East Anglia’s Adapt Low Carbon Group has published a report which claims that today’s quality standards for construction could leave the country unable to meet climate change targets, and makes recommendations for radical changes in construction practice. The report reveals that energy bills for new homes are likely to be higher than anticipated and that occupant health may suffer from poor indoor air quality. The report is the result of a four-year study of building performance in Sweden, Germany, the UK, and elsewhere in Europe as part of Build with CaRe – a European programme promoting energy-efficient buildings.

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 came into force on 6 April 2012 (superseding the 2006 version) leading to additional requirements involving how asbestos-related work is notified and recorded and setting out a new need for ‘medical surveillance’. This programme, available from NBS TV, is a studio-based discussion with HSE asbestos Gillian Birkby of law firm Fladgate, who explains how the updated requirements will affect the day-to-day practice of all those working in the construction industry who may come into contact with asbestos.

The limits of influence. The role of supply chains in influencing health and safety management in two sectors

This report presents findings on factors that positively influence the way health and safety is managed by suppliers in the construction and merchant shipping sectors. The research used two construction case studies to explore what positive effects their supply chains had on health and safety management. The study found that they were influenced by the demands of their clients to ensure good health and safety practice among their own contractors and subcontractors. However, in other chains where high standards from the top aren’t dictated throughout. The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health is urging construction businesses not to cut corners on health and safety at the expense of worker safety.

The main theme of the conference is how the development, procurement, delivery and management of built assets and facilities can deliver value to all stakeholders, including the wider community. The focus is on the maximization of the value jointly created by the stakeholders and the equitable distribution of the resulting rewards. This focus is informed by transformations in public and private organisations concerning the procurement of building and infrastructure, support services and workplace strategies. The intention was that the bringing together of these working commissions will foster research synergies. Construction Open Doors Week-end

A weekend of Open Door events inviting members of the public to visit working construction sites is being organised for the autumn by the UK Contractors Group (UKCG), the Industry Training Board and Sector Skills Council, CITB-ConstructionSkills, the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Considerate Constructors Scheme. The collaborative initiative is the first of its kind for the sector and intends to raise the profile of the industry, challenge stereotypes and encourage greater engagement with the public and local communities to attract talent into the industry.

The events will provide a unique opportunity for members of the public to witness first-hand the scale and complexity of major construction developments and also demonstrate an industry-wide commitment to welcoming a wider, more diverse range of talent into the sector.

This publication contains proceedings of the CTBUH (Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat) 9th World Congress, held in Shanghai from 19-21 September 2012. It includes all 114 papers in both a hardcover book and a DVD containing digital versions of the papers. The event considered whether the vertical city offers the best chance for human survival in our rapidly populating, urbanizing, consuming and resource diminishing world. Delegates to the Congress received the Proceedings for free, while non-attendees can purchase the book.
