This event, organised by the Conference on Training in Architectural Conservation, discussed improving thermal performance in traditional buildings. The conference supported the principle of the government’s Green Deal energy efficiency programme, but expressed strong concerns about the potential physical damage it may impose on buildings of traditional construction. Research also shows that calculated SAP values consistently underestimate the performance of traditional buildings, so works may not deliver expected savings. The conference passed a resolution to ask the government to require Green Deal advisers and installers to have an demonstrable understanding and expertise in traditional building construction, and to be able to advise property owners with options appropriate to their buildings. The government also needs to ensure a joined-up approach between planning, building control and conservation. The conference also proposed that the Green Deal is linked to the national house condition surveys of the home nations to provide effective monitoring of its effects. Presentations are available online.

This 994-page report contains the proceedings from a conference held in Sophia Antiplois in France from 26-28 October 2011. It includes proceedings from the 28th International Workshop of CIB W78 Computer integrated construction, jointly organised with the 7th CIB W102 Information and knowledge management in building.
This conference was dedicated to the latest broad achievements in research, development, standardisation and industrial implementation of advanced Computing, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Knowledge Management (KM) in the construction sector and the built environment. The key role of ICT and KM in the facilitation of information and knowledge delivery in collaborative projects and distributed teams is nowadays widely acknowledged, and the construction sector has now is becoming active in the adoption of models, standards and ICT solutions, with the ambition to better manage and assimilate an increasing amount of information and embedded services, throughout the building lifecycle. The objective is also to enhance the potential for productivity and reduce overall life-cycle product costs, and to further support services designed to facilitate management of life cycle performance and to meet changing end user needs, with a clear customer orientation.

Architects, developers and construction companies can now access a new online resource containing information on over 1,200 green building materials. Kingston University’s Rematerialise website features innovative material solutions made up of waste products and renewable resources from around the world. Scallop shells, nettle fibres, mobile phones and car windscreens are just some of the products listed in the library that is the outcome of 18 years of research by Jakki Dehn, a reader at Kingston University. In 1994, Dehn set out to explore the global availability of new materials made from waste and to investigate how these could be utilised in products, furniture and interiors. The library holds information on their environmental benefits, material content, current applications and related technical data.

The House of Commons Communities and Local Government Select Committee has published the findings of its inquiry into Building Regulations applying to electrical and gas installation and repairs in dwellings. The parts of the Building Regulations that are of most relevance to this inquiry are Part P, which covers installation work on certain types of fixed electrical installations in both new and existing dwellings, and Part J, which covers the safe installation and use of combustion appliances, including boilers. The Committee wanted to examine these two areas of the Building Regulations in relation to safety in the home, and in particular within the context of DCLG’s current review of the Building Regulations. This is an important area, affecting householders, landlords and business across England. A volume containing the written evidence to the Committee is also available here.
