National Infrastructure Plan 2011

The Government has published an updated National Infrastructure Plan. This contains major commitments to improve the UK’s transport and broadband networks as well as steps to attract major new private sector investment. The plan sets out: a clear plan for the UK’s infrastructure; a new strategy for coordinating public and private investment; new investment in critical infrastructure projects; and a new focus on delivery.

Making the economic case for construction

The UK Contractors Group has published further research showing the contribution construction is making to the English regions, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Two new publication examine construction in developing countries. Contemporary issues in constructing in developing countries challenges underlying assumptions and focuses on the distinct characteristics of construction in developing countries. In so doing it considers the issues from the perspective of the developing countries themselves to present a strong contemporary picture for researchers. It forms a companion volume to New perspectives on construction in developing countries, which provides an update on the generic subjects relating to the construction industry in developing countries, and covers new concepts and issues.

The Rational House

A prototype home for urban development has been built on a site in Fulham, west London. The Rational House is designed to Code for Sustainable Homes level 4, complies with the new London Housing Design Guide and is constructed using precast concrete.  The house has been originated by architect Robert Dalziel and engineer Tim Battle, directors of Rational House, to provide high density, low rise, sustainable homes with design and quality at an affordable cost. The prototype, which is being marketed through estate agent Jackson-Stops & Staff, is already generating interest and the design has been included in Barratt East London’s bid to develop a legacy site from the London 2012 Olympics in Stratford, east London.

The 28th International Conference of CIB W078 “Computer Integrated Construction” jointly organised with the 7th CIB W102 “Information and Knowledge management in Building was dedicated to the latest broad achievements in research, development, standardisation and industrial implementation of advanced Computing, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Knowledge Management (KM) in the Construction sector and the Built environment. Green buildings and the future of urban development. Freiburg, 27-28 October 2011

The fourth conference of the Local Renewables Series focused on green buildings and the future of sustainable urban development”. Organised by ICLEI, the conference looked at the evolving role of renewable energy in sustainable buildings and addressed the issue of energy efficiency, both from a technological and city development point of view. Issues covered in the conference included: the political framework for sustainable construction and urban planning from a European, national and regional perspective; upgrading options for the existing building stock;  best practice examples of zero emission districts across Europe; cutting-edge technologies and clever design for energy efficient  solutions; district heating and cooling; financing models and mechanisms, in particular, the new Energy Efficiency Fund; and challenges in the value chain of energy efficient building. Guides on low impact building materials

A series of five information papers for architects, specifiers, materials suppliers and building contractors on low impact building materials is being launched on 31 October 2011. The introductory guides published by IHS BRE Press provide an overview of the benefits and limitations of using various low impact building materials in construction projects. Materials covered in the series are hemp lime, straw bale, unfired clay masonry, cross-laminated timber and natural fibre insulation. Each publication examines the key properties of the respective materials and features research carried out at the University of Bath alongside input from industry experts with commercial experience of the materials’ application in major construction projects.

Specification survey: Summary of findings

In early 2011 NBS carried out a research project to find out how people were creating and using specifications in the UK, and how people saw specifications developing in the future. The research followed on from NBS’s research into BIM (Building Information Modelling), which confirmed that specifications were an integral part of BIM.
