RICS UK Construction Market Survey: 1st quarter 2014

The UK private housing sector is driving a construction industry revival, although skills shortages threaten the pace of recovery, according to the latest Construction Market Survey from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. The survey, which covers the first quarter of 2014, explains that the speed at which confidence is returning to the market is revealed by the fastest rate of growth in workloads since the Construction Market survey began in 1994.

The aim of the seminar, organized by the Construction Industry Council, was to explore the nature of corruption in the construction industry and how to go about protecting construction businesses against it. The relevance of corruption to the construction industry was illustrated by a recent European Commission report that singled out “Urban Development and Construction”, along with “Healthcare” as specifically vulnerable sectors across the EU. CIOB surveys, carried out in 2006 and 2013, show that approximately half of its members believe that corruption is common within the UK construction industry. Presentations are available online.

The Chartered Institution of Building Service Engineers (CIBSE) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers Technical Symposium (ASHRAE)  present the 4th annual Technical Symposium. The symposium encourages the participation of both researchers and industry professionals to share experiences and develop networks. This event  explored both active and passive building systems that will shape an effective future for the built environment and maximize energy efficiency. Key topics included the design and operations of future cities and improving the operation of the built environment as well as presentations of relevant case studies. NBS Specification Survey 2013

In October and November 2013, NBS carried out a research project looking at how the construction industry creates and uses specifications. The research follows previous work carried out in 2011 and 2012. NBS wanted to understand whether specifications have changed, and how people see them developing in the future.

An estimate of the effects of a reduction in the rate of VAT on housing renovation and repair work: 2015 to 2020

This research report by Experian suggests that a reduction of VAT on housing renovation and repair from 20% to 5% could boost the UK economy by more than £15billion from 2015 to 2020. It could also create more than 95,000 jobs and save 240,000 tonnes of CO2 from thousands of homes. The report is backed by more than 60 charities, trade associations, business groups and financial institutions that are united in calling on all three main political parties to commit to the reduction in their 2015 election manifestos.
