The objectives of this conference were: to provide an interdisciplinary forum on global sustainable development for practitioners and academics; to foster dialogue among stakeholders, including senior level policy makers, academics, and practitioners; to propose multidisciplinary strategies for economic, sociopolitical, cultural, and institutional changes; to allow stake holders to share their experiences and research results about all aspects of sustainable human and social development; to discuss the practical challenges encountered in promoting sustainable development and the solutions adopted; and to find global partners for future business or research collaborations. In Senegal, migration has long been a key strategy to escape poverty and remittances are an important component of household budgets. This report describes how the impacts of climate change contribute to increasing these already high levels of mobility. Drawing on discussions with local residents, it explores their responses to environmental change and socio-economic and cultural transformations in four locations.

This event provided an opportunity to explore the relationships between the built environment and urban health at a regional and global level. Its core objective was to identify and showcase evidence of projects and initiatives that have improved the well-being of urban dwellers as a result of innovative planning and design practices. In particular, the conference focused on the health and well-being implications of urban density and its planning and design. The conference combined a focus on Hong Kong with comparative analysis and policy learning from other cities including Cape Town, Karachi, London, Maputo and Vancouver. The 10th Metropolis World Congress represented a unique opportunity to exchange and establish contacts among more than 850 delegates and urban experts from more than 150 countries around the world. The event presented various solutions for governance, urban planning, participatory democracy, innovation, the fight against climate change, sustainability, peri-urban agriculture and renewable energies, and set forth the new guidelines for Metropolis for the next years. Two new publication examine construction in developing countries. Contemporary issues in constructing in developing countries challenges underlying assumptions and focuses on the distinct characteristics of construction in developing countries. In so doing it considers the issues from the perspective of the developing countries themselves to present a strong contemporary picture for researchers. It forms a companion volume to New perspectives on construction in developing countries, which provides an update on the generic subjects relating to the construction industry in developing countries, and covers new concepts and issues.

The theme of the 47th Congress is “Liveable Cities – Urbanising World, Meeting the Challenge”. This theme reflects the central problem of the acknowledged world wide phenomena of the exponential and inexorable inward flow of people to cities and the consequent rapid expansion of urban development. The city of Wuhan, with its ever increasing population base, has acknowledged the importance of this Congress theme especially with regard to learning how their particular range of urban, transportation congestion and spatial problems are being dealt with sustainably across the globe. The Congress contains four workshops exploring the major theme in terms of low carbon environments, sustainable networks, all transportation pathways including waterways, recreational provisions, heritage and the green environment. Based on a study of the housing dynamics in India and frameworks in comparable cities, this paper outlines key initiatives being taken by the Indian Government, which are worth applauding, while laying down other aspects which require immediate Government intervention.

Through a series of 30 interviews with key climate change communicators, this report identifies some of the challenges and opportunities of communicating climate change in Uganda. The findings represent the views of a wide range of climate change communication stakeholders – from civil society organisations, the media and government representatives. The report aims to amplify these voices, to summarise the expertise that exists in Uganda on climate change communication, and to disseminate this as widely as possible.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a report on gender, climate change and health, which is based on the recognition that the effects of climate on human society, and our ability to mitigate and adapt to them, are mediated by social factors, including gender.
