This edition of LINK, from the Higher Education Academy Network for Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism, focuses on the issue of assessment and feedback. Topics covered include: assessment of group work; the challenges and opportunities of work-based assessment for higher education; a pilot scheme undertaken at Leeds Metropolitan University for assignment submission and feedback through Blackboard; an overview of the student experience of an integrated approach to feedback aimed at counteracting the age-old problem of feedback lethargy; using smart targets and questioning skills in feedback to learners as a vehicle for improving grades; looks at recent developments which allows students to review the work of fellow students; the use of video enhanced feedback in events management education; and CASPAR: a web-based tool for self and peer assessment in group work.

Skills4studycampus is an interactive e-learning resource, designed to empower students to understand, practise and improve four of the core skills needed for successful study : writing; critical thinking reading and note-making; and referencing and plagiariam.  Students are encouraged to complete a wide variety of interactive activities, tests and assessments, to keep personal notes, tags and a learning journal. The learning experience is therefore highly personalised and focused on their individual needs. The resource has been developed by the study skills team at Palgrave Macmillan and is based on the work of Stella Cottrell, the best-selling author of The Study Skills Handbook, Critical Thinking Skills and The Palgrave Student Planner.

Skills and knowledge for sustainable communities

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) in partnership with HCA Academy, the skills arm of the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), commissioned 11 research projects to address a variety of different aspects associated with the development of skills and knowledge for sustainable communities. The projects draw on different disciplines and expertise across the UK, with relevance to the English context. Work carried out at the University of Strathclyde has been highlighting lessons to be learned across the initiative and disseminating the findings. Summaries of the research projects are available online, together with five briefing papers and details of the case studies. Key findings are to be published in a special issue of the Town Planning Review.

Home building skills: an action plan for 2020

Housebuilding’s future skills are set out in a new report produced by a joint initiative between NHBC, Zero Carbon Hub and ConstructionSkills, supported by the Home Builders Federation, supported by the Home Builders Federation. The initiative was set up 18 months ago to investigate the likely changes affecting the new homes industry and advise on how professional, trade and technical roles should prepare in terms of training and qualifications. The report sets out a series of scenarios depicting the future of homebuilding.

Supporting academic integrity: approaches and resources for higher education

The Academic Integrity Service has published a guidance report that will help universities and colleges manage the complex issues of student plagiarism, collusion and data fabrication. The report brings together resources on academic integrity and is designed to provide the higher education sector with a range of perspectives on this vital issue. A key theme to emerge from the case studies in this report is the importance of ensuring students with diverse backgrounds and experiences are supported throughout their study so they can develop academic skills in the context of their subject.  Innovative approaches to assessment and the use of software tools to prevent or detect plagiarism were also common themes.

Apprenticeships within the housing sector

In early 2010 the National Housing Federation was commissioned by the National Apprenticeship Service to produce a report on the level of apprenticeship activity with housing associations. This report sets out our findings with recommendations for future action. The report also contains a series of detailed case studies from across the country which highlight in some detail what members are doing and the areas in which they are recruiting apprentices to include construction, housing management, business administration and horticulture among others.

The CfBT Education Trust has produced a report that examines what lasting educational benefits can be created from mega events. The report concludes that projects arising from and created by mega events are not in themselves the valuable lasting legacy of education. Rather it is the changing attitudes, values and approaches, and the increased opportunities that create a strong engagement with education among the wider community.
