Many projects demonstrate that renewable energy and bioclimatic architecture represent cost-effective and environmentally friendly ways to improve the living conditions of rural people. However, most of the projects face significant difficulties when it comes to mainstreaming the innovation. This manual, based on the experience of six projects in Asia, aims to provide practical guidance regarding how to design a scaling-up strategy for sustainable energy and building projects. It has been produced by the SAESUp (Sustainable Architecture & Energy Scaling Up) project, which is supported by the Building and Social Housing Foundation. (BSHF).
Evaluating operational energy performance of buildings at the design stage (TM54)

This difference between expected and realised energy performance has come to be known as the ‘performance gap’. There are two main reasons for this performance gap. The first is that the method of calculating energy use for the purposes of compliance does not take into account all the energy uses in a building. The second reason for the performance gap is related to site practice. This Technical Memorandum (TM) addresses the first reason. It provides building designers and owners with clear guidance on how to evaluate operational energy use more fully, and accurately, at the design stage. After a brief introduction, which explains the need for the guidance in more detail, it explains the importance of making an accurate estimate of the operating hours and likely occupancy of the building. It then sets out how the operational energy required for the building can be estimated. As well as covering lighting, heating, ventilation and cooling and provision of hot water, it also considers lifts and escalators, small power loads, catering, server rooms and other plant and equipment. The Global Real Estates Sustainability Benchmark GRESB has released 2013 Report, which is based on sustainability data gathered from 543 property companies and funds, providing aggregate information on 49,000 properties across the globe. The report shows that the real estate sector is significantly reducing its environmental impact, decreasing energy consumption by 4.8 percent over the 2011-2012 period – equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 163,000 homes. Over the same period, greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 2.5 percent, and water consumption decreased by 1.2 percent.

This Legal Update from DLA Piper provides a snapshot of the state of play of renewable energy in the Asia-Pacific, focusing specifically on trends in Japan, the Republic of Korea and the Philippines where there has been recent and remarkable progress. The update discusses India and China as emerging superpowers turning to renewable energy to meet energy security issues. Despite its location outside the Asia Pacific, the paper also considers South Africa which has endured a power crisis of its own since 2007.

CIB CommissionTG66, Energy and the Built Environment, has published its final report, providing a structured overview and synthesis of the information gathered throughout the project. The outcome of this task group clearly highlights that the energy challenges in buildings are an issue of concern in all countries involved in this study, but that the roadmaps and actions in the different continents vary widely. The study concludes that further international collaboration in the context of CIB or in other networks is therefore needed.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) partnered to analyse current practices in the design and implementation of building energy codes. The aim is to consolidate existing efforts and to encourage more attention to the role of the built environment in a low-carbon and climate-resilient world, and to share lessons learned between IEA member countries and non-IEA countries. The objective is to spread best practices, limit pressures on global energy supply, improve energy security, and contribute to environmental sustainability. The webinar presentation is also available.
