Renewable Heat Incentive

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), the Government’s scheme to promote the use of renewable heat in homes, was launched on 9 April 2014. The aim is to encourage households to install heating systems such as biomass boilers, air and ground source heat pumps, and solar thermal panels, by giving them quarterly payments (over seven years) for the amount of renewable heat their system produces. The scheme is open to home owners, social and private landlords, and people who build their own homes, and available to households both on and off the gas grid.

In late 2013, the Energy Efficiency Financial Institutions Group (EEFIG) was jointly convened by the European Commission and the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative to bring together their experience to address the need to increase the scale of energy efficiency investments across the EU. This is the interim report of EEFIG and represents the consolidated consensus and shared views of its expert members. The initiative aims to: engage in an ongoing dialogue with long-term investors and experts; define a common language; improve the understanding of market specificities; ultimately stimulate financing of energy efficiency for buildings.

Early public engagement is vital to the acceptance of new energy technologies, according to a new report by the Energy Generation and Supply Knowledge Transfer Network. The report gives an overview of current research on public perception and engagement with energy technologies, and how this may affect the energy industry. Case studies on smart meters, wind farms, carbon capture and storage, whole energy systems and transmission power lines are used to highlight examples of public engagement and show where a lack of public engagement has been detrimental to emerging energy markets.
