Natural England has published a new report demonstrating that investment in the environment offers excellent value for money. The report assesses the evidence across a wide range of themes, including economic growth, health, social cohesion and resilience to climate change.

Natural England and the RSPB, in partnership with the Environment Agency’s Climate Ready Support Service and the Forestry Commission have published a new resource for conservation practitioners. The manual is a hands-on document giving up-to-date, detailed, habitat-specific information for conservation managers to use, to prepare and respond to a changing climate. It is divided into three sections, focusing on: the key concepts for making decisions about adaptation and the impact of climate change on the natural environment; climate change impacts and potential adaptation responses for 27 of England’s most important habitats; and the relationship between climate change and the delivery of ecosystem services.

Heathrow Airport has published its latest annual sustainability report, setting out ten steps it will be taking to reduce environmental impact, invest in local communities and support economic growth as part of its 2020 sustainability goals. The report highlights a number of key energy and emissions milestones.

This is a collaborative event that brings together professionals from the worlds of forestry and arboriculture to hear ground breaking international research on urban foresting. The event highlights the many social, econonic and environmental benefits that trees bring to urban populations, and indeed the planet. This event is hosted tri-annually by the Institute of Chartered Foresters as its National Conference, and managed by a pan-industry steering group of organisations with an interest in urban greening. Presentations are available online.

Shedding light: a survey of local authority approaches to lighting in England

The Campaign to Protect Rural England has published a report which is described as the first research to survey councils specifically on how they control light pollution. As a result of the research CPRE is calling for councils to do more to control lighting in their areas. The report makes nine recommendations including: preserving dark skies by having a presumption against new lighting in existing dark areas; allocating lighting zones to help determine where streetlights should and should not go; and preventing inappropriate and badly designed lighting of development that masks views of the night sky.
