Framing urban sustainable development: Features, challenges and potentials of urban SD from a multi-level governance perspective

This latest Quarterly Report from the European Sustainable Development Network provides an overview of the concept of urban sustainable development (SD) as well as initiatives and programs of urban SD on the global and European level. In order to complement the ESDN Quarterly report(see above) and as preparatory documents for the 10th ESDN Workshop.

The ESDN has written two new case studies. The European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities & Communities seeks to significantly accelerate the industrial-scale roll-out of smart city solutions integrating technologies from Energy, Transport and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). This is where there is most untapped innovation potential and most environment and societal benefits to be gained. The EIP has published its Implementation Plan, setting out the EIP’s ideas on how to best harness innovative technologies, innovative funding mechanisms and innovative public private partnerships. The focus is very much on societal and environmental benefits.

Trends in extreme weather events in Europe: implications for national and European Union adaptation strategies

A new report from the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC), warns that climate change will bring more severe weather to Europe’s door, and that urgent action is required if member states are to be adequately prepared. Noting that ‘heat waves, floods and storms do not respect national frontiers’, the report calls for policy makers to act now at both national and EU levels.

The results of a survey looking into Europeans’ attitudes towards urban mobility has been published. The survey was designed to look at Europeans’: transport habits; experience of transport problems in EU cities; opinions of measures to improve travel within cities; and expectations for traffic improvements within cities and their opinions of who is responsible for these improvements.
