State of the Business Events Industry Report 2011

Following on from the inaugural State of the Industry Report released in October 2011 the Business Events Council of Australia (BECA) has released the second annual State of the Business Events industry Report. The 2011 report demonstrates a strengthening of the industry in numbers of travelers with International business event visitor spend in Australia increasing by 15% and Domestic overnight business event visitor spend increasing by 19%.  However it also shows a weakening in State Government funding support of the Convention Bureaus by 28% and this is reflected in the increase in lost bids (5%) and the reduction of successful bids (12%). The correlation between the two clearly demonstrates the impact Government support has on the ability of the States to attract business events.

There is a wide variety of data and research on the business events sector. Some of this is produced on a regular (usually annual) basis; some is in the form of ad hoc reports and papers published to address a topical issue; some is only available as a membership benefit from one of the industry’s trade or professional associations (although press releases are usually issued highlighting key points from such information). This is a summary of the current information available. It also lists key textbooks relevant to the sector. Wherever possible, the full title of each item given, the source, publication date, a brief synopsis, and contact details (usually a web site) for further information.

The impacts of London 2012: Researching the supply chain challenges for the UK events industry

The International Special Events Society (ISES) UK has published the findings of a study into the supply chain challenges facing the events industry in 2012. The research has been focused on identifying what actions have been taken so far to increase supply capacities over a period that covers major events such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics, Paralympics and the Cultural Olympiad. It is hoped that this research will offer and inform decision makers in the UK events industry on how to face the challenges of a supply-constrained environment.
