This survey was conducted at the request of the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy to get a snapshot of people’s opinions on a range of urban issues. Earlier surveys were conducted in 2004, 2006 and 20091. This survey included all capital cities of the countries concerned (except for Switzerland), together with between one and six more cities in the larger countries. In each city, around 500 citizens were interviewed.

Building Futures, the think tank of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), has published a new report exploring some of the economic and social changes that a dominant ageing population will bring in the next 30 years. The report describes a future where people may choose luxurious, international retirement lifestyles or live with their generations of their families in one grand design. It adds that our beleaguered high streets could take on a new lease of life, with health hubs, child care facilities and universities and. our coastal towns, traditionally favoured by older generations but currently facing big social and economic challenges, could all be transformed by a more active retired population.

While national governments struggle to establish an agreed global climate deal, many of the world’s largest cities have been taking action to combat the effects of a changing climate. As a result, these cities are cutting their carbon footprint, reporting annual energy savings, and their residents are benefiting from healthier living and better business environments. These are just some of the findings from a recent report published by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). The report analysed data from members of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group in 110 cities around the world, including Tokyo, New York, and London.

The World Health Organisation has published a report to help national policy-makers in Europe to assess the costs of health and adaptation. It provides guidance on assessing the costs of the health impacts of climate change and also the costs and benefits of adaptation to avoid or minimise these impacts.
