Europeans live longer and healthier lives than in the past, partly due to successful environmental policies that have reduced the exposure to harmful environmental contaminants in air, water and food, according to a new report. However, these contaminants are still a problem, and several new health risks are emerging, for example, from new chemicals, new products and changing lifestyle patterns.

More specialist housing and support services are urgently needed if Britain is to cope with the rising numbers of people with dementia, according to a new report from the National Housing Federation, the Dementia Services Development Centre, the Housing Learning and Improvement Network and Foundations. It shows for the first time how good adapted housing can play a crucial role in supporting people living with dementia.

A report from the House of Lords Committee on Public Service and Demographic Change argues that measures in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) aimed at ensuring a supply of specialist homes for the country’s ageing population should be ‘clarified and tightened’. The BIOPICCC Toolkit provides a series of resources to assist local authorities, partner organisations, and neighbourhood and community groups with local level resilience planning. Specifically, the resources are designed to support users to develop plans to make health and social care services for older people (aged 65 years and older) more resilient to the effects of extreme weather.

The Town and Country Planning Association has re-published Norman Macfayden’s Health and Garden Cities, the first of a ‘New Series’ of pamphlets published by the TCPA (at the time, operating under the name Garden Cities and Town Planning Association), issued in 1940. Over 70 years on, the pamphlet is still of critical relevance today as the Government embarks on both a reform of public health and a new generation of Garden Cities and Suburbs. It highlights how Garden City planning made a significant contribution to improving the quality of life of ordinary people, providing an unparalleled improvement on what had come before.
