This research, published by the Health and Safety Executive, has looked to identify factors which have contributed to the London 2012 Olympic Park being delivered on time, on budget and with an exemplary health and safety record. Where other research has captured ‘how’ things were done, this research has explored ‘why’ and focused on the underpinning human and organisational interactions.
Housing for people with a learning disability

The housing shortage for adults with learning difficulties has worsened in the last year according to research from Mencap, a leading disabilities charity. The report found that just one in three people with a learning disability lives independently in either supported accommodation, as a tenant, or as a homeowner.

In 2002 the Department of Health (DH) produced one of the first country-specific reports detailing the impact climate change is having and is likely to have on the health of UK citizens. Produced jointly by the DH and the Health Protection Agency, the third edition of this work and includes new chapters on aeroallergens, the indoor environment and health co-benefits to be reaped from action on climate change.

This is the second in a series of Synthesis Reports (SR) produced by URBAN-NEXUS. These Reports are intended mainly for municipalities, policy-makers and businesses engaged in urban issues, but may also be of interest to organisations, institutions and networks involved in decision-making and developing partnerships to tackle problems encountered in urban sustainable development and management. Each Synthesis Report (SR) of the Urban Nexus project will address a different theme; and this one highlights the importance and urgency of integrating health and quality of life in urban areas. The conference took participants through the process of achieving good homes. Presentations were given on why building performance in new homes matters, including for energy performance and health and well being and how to deliver this with innovation and quality assurance processes. Other topics covered include housing and community management; management plans for the Bicester Eco town; and new financing models and solutions for good homes. Presentations are available online.

The Atlas of health and climate is a product of this unique collaboration between the meteorological and public health communities. It provides sound scientific information on the connections between weather and climate and major health challenges. These range from diseases of poverty to emergencies arising from extreme weather events and disease outbreaks. They also include environmental degradation, the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases and the universal trend of demographic ageing.
