This is an updated publication from the 2006 first edition that takes into account new national planning policy guidance and provides new case study evidence to show how heritage-based regeneration can work in practice. It is collectively written by the British Property Federation, English Heritage, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Deloitte Real Estate, combining their expertise and in-depth knowledge of heritage properties and the market. The practical step-by-step guide for developers, owners, local authorities and advisers provides invaluable advice and warns of common pitfalls and points to ways of overcoming them. It signposts more than 30 information sources and is intended as the ‘first-stop’ reference document or ‘toolkit’ for the regeneration of the historic environment and heritage buildings.

The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has unveiled a new masterplan for Kings Dock, Liverpool, which sets out a vision and development framework for a leisure-led, mixed-use quarter. Working with Liverpool City Council and the Arena Convention Centre Liverpool (ACCL), the HCA has devised the plan to guide development at Kings Dock to maximise the growing visitor economy and enhance opportunities for existing and future residents of the area. It positions the quarter as a destination in its own right, building on its history and heritage and maximising the attractive dockside location. The new development will also create a pleasant neighbourhood with attractive public squares and open spaces allowing access to the water space.

English Heritage commissioned a research report 2011 to review the issues facing local authorities as they manage their heritage assets at a time of acute financial stress. It identifies recent patterns of closure, disposal and demolition of heritage assets and local authorities’ plans for the next five years. The research also evaluates the capacity of the third sector to acquire heritage property from local government and how this capacity could be increased. The report is illustrated with examples of good practice in relation to the management, disposal and transfer of heritage assets, as well as some cautionary tales.
