The Government is currently conducting a standards review which will affect the regulatory landscape for housing. Whatever the result of the review, BRE thinks that the UK housing sector will continue to require the sort of framework, benchmarks and guidance currently provided by Code for Sustainable Homes, the standard for new homes introduced by Government in 2007. This view was backed up by the 150 guests who attended this event, reiterating a need for a housing code that will benefit householders and house builders, the wider UK industry and economy and the environment. Video presentations and report are available online.

The National Housing Federation has sponsored a programme of research on the impact of welfare reform on housing associations and their tenants. The work is being undertaken by Ipsos MORI and the University of Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research (CCHPR). This report is based on a number of case study interviews with housing associations. The objective was to provide a more rounded and in-depth commentary on the impacts to build on the initial results of the baseline report. The paper is organised around three themes; first an overview of the broad impacts of the major components of the welfare reform programme; second the direct impact upon tenants and third the impact upon broad strategy and policy. A lack of attractive retirement housing and negative perceptions are preventing larger family homes being made available for younger buyers, according to a study from the International Longevity Centre-UK, produced for housing provider Hanover.  The paper recommends that health and social care policy should encourage people to move to the type of housing that best meets their needs, and that the government should work with councils to assess whether they have enough homes for older people.

Knight Frank’s annual report on the house building sector involves a survey of 100 senior executives from house builders and developers, looking at issues concerning the house building industry. The survey was carried out shortly after the chancellor announced the help to buy scheme in the Budget in March 2013. It suggests help to buy could aid price growth and boost development volumes but only if lenders and buyers engage with the scheme. It points out the take-up of newbuy, a pre-cursor to help to buy, was relatively modest in the first year.
