The latest research from the Estates Gazette shows that with supply in core high end residential areas around Mayfair and Knightsbridge severely constrained, developers have pushed into more untested areas around Vauxhall Nine Elms in an effort to feed the uprecedented demand from international investors. It is argued that this could lead to a series of ‘dead zones’ in areas not far enough out to be affordable by owner occupier standards but not close enough to the centre to be considered prime.

A fundamental review of housing design is needed if the UK is to produce successful low carbon homes of the future, according to a new guide by the NHBC Foundation. The guide explores the challenges of designing zero carbon homes and helps identify the processes needed to achieve cost effective and practical design. The Relish (Residents 4 Low Impact Sustainable Homes) initiative was launched in March 2009 by Worthing Homes, FFT and Rydon. The purpose of this project is to reduce energy use in existing occupied homes through low cost, sensible refurbishments giving maximum return, in terms of energy savings, per pound spent. The ambition is to create a new standard for low carbon retrofitting, similar to the Code for Sustainable Homes, which has brought about major changes in the new build sector since its implementation.

PlaceShapers, an alliance of over 100 housing associations, has published a report which provides 12 examples from across the country where housing associations have successfully built high-quality homes in local communities. It also suggests how more homes could be built based on interviews with people in the sector. These included: more certainty for providers on the future of social rents and capital funding; the release of more publicly owned land; sensible and strategic release of green belt land; and changing the gearing limits.
