As part of UNDP’s support to El Salvador, an international conference on strategies for adapting public and private infrastructure to climate change was organized in San Salvador on 30 June 2010. The conference highlighted many of the issues related to increasing the climate resilience of infrastructure. Proceedings of the conference have been made available in a publication from the UN Environment Programme.

International Workshop on Measuring Investment in Transport Infrastructure. Paris, 9-10 February 2012

This workshop provided a platform for statisticians and stakeholders to discuss and better understand transport infrastructure investment and maintenance data. The aim was to bring together data providers and users to share their experience with the methodology, interpretation and limitations of transport investment data. The workshop allowed for comparison and discussion of practice and examined the experience with harmonising definitions and methods. In doing so, opportunities for data quality improvement were identified. Presentations are available online, covering the following themes: Measuring infrastructure investment and maintenance; Combining data from public and private entities; Harmonisation of international data collections; Matching needs and identifying gaps.

Minor measures, major results: Fine-tuning the major infrastructure planning system

Further improvements need to be made to major infrastructure planning in the UK to help accelerate investment and speed up decision-making, according to a new report from the CBI.  The CBI urges the Government to reduce uncertainty at the pre-application stage, simplify the non-planning consent landscape, and introduce more flexibility and a sense of urgency into the system.

CIB Working Commission W101 on Spatial Planning and Infrastructure Development, held its annual meeting on 20 October 2011 in Helsinki. The main subject of the meeting was to start a comparison of “Assessment Tools on Urban Sustainability”, which is considered one of the most competitively progressing technological fields with diversity among research groups internationally, in relation to the subject of urban planning and sustainability. In the meeting, three specific tools were taken up for comparative study and discussion, which are: HEKO, CASBEE-City and the NILIM tool. Electricity transmission costing study

The Institution of Engineering and Technology has published the findings of research which analyses the whole life costs of installing and maintaining new high voltage transmission circuits under the ground, under the sea and over ground. The report’s remit purely relates to engineering costs.  Although it does acknowledge the aesthetic, human and environmental impacts, it makes no analysis of these areas.
