This National Policy Statement sets out the Government’s conclusions on the need for new port infrastructure, considering the current place of ports in the national economy, the available evidence on future demand and the options for meeting future needs. It explains to planning decision-makers the approach they should take to proposals, including the main issues which, in the Government’s view, will need to be addressed to ensure that future development is fully sustainable, as well as the weight to be given to the need for new port infrastructure and to the positive and negative impacts it may bring.

Growing Places Fund: Guidance note on Revolving Infrastructure Funds

This note provides practical advice on some of the key issues that are likely to be encountered when considering the development and operation of a Revolving Infrastructure Fund using funding from the Growing Places Fund. The Growing Places Fund (GPF) is intended to be used by Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) to invest in key items of infrastructure to enable development, with the money invested to be returned to the LEP for re-investment in further provision of infrastructure.

National Infrastructure Plan 2011

The Government has published an updated National Infrastructure Plan. This contains major commitments to improve the UK’s transport and broadband networks as well as steps to attract major new private sector investment. The plan sets out: a clear plan for the UK’s infrastructure; a new strategy for coordinating public and private investment; new investment in critical infrastructure projects; and a new focus on delivery.

Hinkley Point C new nuclear power station: Application to Infrastructure Planning Commission

Growing Places Fund Prospectus

Funding through the Growing Places Fund, announced by the Government, will provide £500m to enable the development of local funds to address infrastructure constraints, promoting economic growth and the delivery of jobs and houses. The short, high-level prospectus sets out how the fund will operate and invites proposals from local partnerships, who will need to complete and submit the Pre-Qualification Questionnaire.

The theme of the 47th Congress is “Liveable Cities – Urbanising World, Meeting the Challenge”. This theme reflects the central problem of the acknowledged world wide phenomena of the exponential and inexorable inward flow of people to cities and the consequent rapid expansion of urban development. The city of Wuhan, with its ever increasing population base, has acknowledged the importance of this Congress theme especially with regard to learning how their particular range of urban, transportation congestion and spatial problems are being dealt with sustainably across the globe. The Congress contains four workshops exploring the major theme in terms of low carbon environments, sustainable networks, all transportation pathways including waterways, recreational provisions, heritage and the green environment. The Infrastructure and Corporate Resilience Programme, under the auspices of the Cabinet Office,  has published a guide which aims to support infrastructure owners and operators, emergency responders, industry groups, regulators, and government departments, to work together to improve the resilience of critical infrastructure and essential services. The Guide provides advice on: identifying and assessing risks from natural hazards; standards of resilience; business continuity and corporate governance; guidance for economic regulated sectors; information sharing; and understanding dependencies.

This workshop was aimed at providing a space for presenting and discussing recent research on the relationships between low carbon urbanism, resilience, vulnerability and social justice. We invited a number of key researchers in the field in order to establish which thematic areas have received insufficient attention until now, and how we might go about in covering them. A particular emphasis was placed on the development of aReader on Low Carbon and Resilient Cities as well as future research funding proposals in this domain.
