Atkins’ report Future Proofing Cities was produced in partnership with the UK Department for International Development and University College London in 2012. The report assessed 129 major cities across Africa and Asia and was developed to help tackle risks to long term prosperity and growth. Atkins has updated the Future Proofing Cities webpage where you can find our current projects in India, Colombia, China, Nigeria and the United Kingdom. The book highlights field research and studio-based projects on Dharavi, Mumbai conducted with the Bartlett Development Planning Unit students from 2009 to 2012. The collection of essays, photography, and student work illustrates both the theoretical underpinnings and pedagogical ethos of the MSc Building and Urban Design in Development. This publication draws from first-hand experience, research, and critical practices that have sought to investigate a 175 hectares swatch of land in the middle of Mumbai that is home to over 1 million inhabitants.  It is a collection of short and long essays, drawings and diagrams, photography, and visualisations on what is known as Dharavi.

The Urban Uncertainty project, based at the London School of Economics, is a collaborative investigation into emerging ways of envisioning and governing the future of cities. Combining empirical research with theoretical exploration, it seeks to develop a set of conceptual tools for analyzing and comparing the diversity of ways in which urban governments and populations orient themselves towards the uncertain and the unknown. In the context of heightened anxiety about climate change, financial crisis, armed conflict, political instability, natural disaster, and disease outbreak. Case studies are drawn from key sectors of urban governance, such as security, environment, finance, health, and infrastructure. The city of Bogotá features prominently due to its international reputation as a model of “good governance,” but it is compared with research on other cities from the global North and South.

This report investigates how housing systems in Brazil, China and India are changing in response to economic developments. It conducts a review of the following: developments in housing demand and need; the nature of supply systems; responses to demand pressures; significant policy developments; and major housing outcomes. From its extensive analysis it draws some high level recommendations which can direct housing and urbanisation policy in the BRICs nations as well as in the OECD economies. These include the importance of providing the necessary high level support for local housing needs and initiatives, and an alignment between housing policies and the development of city infrastructure.

In a joint report with the Development Research Centre of China’s State Council, the World Bank has published a report which highlights the scale of urbanization that has taken place in China. The report makes a series of recommendations designed to ensure urbanization is efficient, inclusive and sustainable. These would encourage China’s cities to generate more revenue and to help the nation deal with environmental degradation.
