BRICS as it is known globally, is a group of leading emerging economies playing a key role in the world development platforms. It consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The Group has received overwhelming global attention since its inception in 2009 and it has been playing a critical role across the globe. This statistical report is the fourth joint statistical publication by the National Statistics Offices of the BRICS Group. The publication is one of the many channels to disseminate statistical data about the member countries and it is aimed at harmonizing BRICS statistical information. Topics covered include: population, national accounts, industries, energy, tourism, transport, and resources and environment.

Building on the transit-oriented development (TOD) approach, this manual proposes planning and design strategies to improve quality of life in cities. Examples draw from Mexican cities, while the guide provides useful insights for other countries as well. The guide is aimed at private sector decision makers, investors, and builders, and contains 28 concrete recommendations for designing more inclusive, sustainable cities. This document is also available in Spanish and Chinese.

In this first instalment of a two-part review of Africa’s Urban Revolution, a new series of essays from the African Centre for Cities (ACC), Kerwin Datu learns how policies surrounding issues such as decentralisation, food security and armed conflict must now adapt to the maturing of Africa’s urbanisation experience. The second part considers a provocative new theory that urbanisation is driven by demographic transition, not by economic growth, and that even rural development initiatives will directly cause increased urban populations regardless of where and whether economic opportunities even exist. The 2014 African Transformation Report draws on the African Center for Economic Transformation’s research program of country, sector, and thematic studies to look systematically at transformation as a broad framework for economic growth and development. The report introduces the African Transformation Index to help African policymakers see how their countries are transforming and where they stand in relation to their neighbors. Cities are growing rapidly, and their transit systems need to keep up. As the world’s urban population soars from 3.4 to 6.4 billion between now and 2050, cities must invest in high quality public transit to create sustainable, economically healthy, and livable cities. A new study released by the Institution for Transportation & Development Policy evaluates nine key countries (Brazil, China, Colombia, France, India, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa and USA) and if their investment in urban mass transit has kept pace with the needs of their growing populations.

On 16 March 2014 China’s State Council released the “National New-type Urbanization Plan,” a long-awaited top-down effort to utilize urbanization as an engine for economic growth in the near future. The plan details an ambitious series of goals the government seeks to accomplish by 2020. This blog argues that speeding up the urbanization process will have far-reaching environmental and social effects for China.
