The Public Inquiry into the proposed partial demolition of Smithfield General Market, the Annex, and Redhouse opens 11th February 2014, and is scheduled to last for 12 days, until Friday, 28th February.  Taking place at the Basinghall Suite at Guildhall, the inquiry is open to members of the public. The Sustainable Development Research Network (SDRN) Annual Conference was well attended by representatives from both the research and policy fields, and featured presentations on themes such as natural capital, economic growth, policy-making and engaging the public, evidence, tools and policy evaluation, and renewable energy. The conference generated some interesting discussion and debate, including commentary via the conference twitter hashtag #SD2020 and a number of blog postings. Presentations from the conference are now available on the SDRN website, and can be accessed by following the pdf hyperlinks in the online agenda which is available here. Videos of many of the presentations will also be made available on the SDRN website in due course.

London’s housing market is beginning to show signs of ‘bubble-like conditions’, while the rest of the UK has returned to normality, according to a report on housing from Ernst & Young. According to the report, income multiples are now back to pre-financial crisis levels in London, with homeowners taking on ever larger mortgages. Caution on the part of borrowers and lenders should prevent a serious problem developing, but the report warns that policy makers should be monitoring this trend closely and be prepared to take action if this key indicator of market stability continues to escalate.

The results of polling, on London Councils’ website, shows that housing is the number one issue for Londoners. Ipsos MORI polled a total of 1,000 adults aged 18+ across London’s boroughs by telephone between 18 and 29 October 2013 on behalf of London Councils.
