Since 2009 the Mayor’s London’s Great Outdoors and Better Streets programmes have helped transform the Capital’s public spaces and street network. A range of interventions are making streets work and feel better for all, while increasing the vitality and sense of place in communities across the city. This book is a celebration of that ambition and the success of recent public realm projects across London. They show how moving around and living in the Capital can be improved significantly by careful planning, creative thought and good design, applied to different locations and settings at a range of scales.

London needs 50,000 new homes a year, the equivalent of 18 new Olympic Villages and roughly double the current building rate, to address its growing housing crisis, according to international real estate adviser, Savills, in a new report. The report argues that homes are needed across all tenures. Over a third (31%) of the requirement is for affordable homes (including anything not at market price), 27 per cent for market sale, but the biggest requirement (41%) is for homes available to rent.

Much of the story of London’s development can be traced through the historic ownership of large pieces of land which, through the on-going ownership of freehold assets and their lease terms, have created a resilient cycle of change and renewal. Today this long-term attitude to investment, development and management has influenced the development of new large-scale and mixed-use areas of the capital, such as King’s Cross, Canary Wharf and the Olympic Park. This major new exhibition, held at the Building Centre until 17 December 2013, will examine the evolution of London’s Great Estates and their impact on the development of new large-scale areas of the capital under a single ownership.

A report from the House of Commons Public Accounts Select Committee argues that while the Department for Transport has done well so far to deliver the first phase of the Thameslink infrastructure project to time and under budget, progress in securing new trains and letting a new franchise to run the route has been much less encouraging. The Committee also expresses concerns about the Department’s skills and capacity to complete Thameslink by 2018, alongside its ambitious wider portfolio of programmes and projects.
