Shaping neighbourhoods: Character and context

The Mayor has published for public consultation draft Supplementary Planning Guidance to help with the implementation of policies in Chapter 7 of the 2011 London Plan, particularly Policies 7.4 on Local Character and 7.1 on Building London’s Neighbourhoods and Communities. The draft document sets out an approach and process to help understand the character and context of a place so that its results can inform the planning and design process, and guide change in way which is responsive to individual places and locations. A non-technical summary sets out the main messages of the main SPG. Comments on the draft SPG are requested by 12 May 2013.

Town Centres: Draft Supplementary Planning Guidance

The Mayor of London has issued for public consultation draft supplementary planning guidance on Town Centres. This provides guidance on the implementation of London Plan Policy 2.15 Town centres and its associated Annex, and of other policies in the Plan with specific reference to town centre development and management. It also provides guidance on Policy 2.16 Strategic Outer London Development Centres and their potential to be developed as business locations with distinct strengths of greater than sub regional importance. London’s Quality of Life Indicators 2012 Report

The London Sustainable Development Commission’s fourth Quality of Life Indicators report provides a snapshot of London’s quality of life and identifies the sustainability issues London faces.  The indicator set encompasses 33 headline indicators across the environmental, social and economic spheres.  It provides baseline data that will inform the Commission’s future work programme and advice to the Mayor.

Crossrail 2: Supporting London’s growth

A major new rail link connecting south-west and north-east London, via a tunnel beneath central London, is recommended in a new report by London First. The new line, Crossrail 2, would transform journeys for commuters from the south-west and the north-east, including Wimbledon, Kingston, Twickenham, Hackney, Islington, Tottenham, Cheshunt and Hertford East. It would also provide essential relief to major London interchanges, including Euston, Victoria and Clapham Junction, and reduce pressure on congested Tube lines. In some cases, journey times would be more than halved.

London: Hub city

This blog from Jolyon Brewis, Chief Executive of Grimshaw, presents an argument for London as a hub city. He argues that we may see two types of aviation hub developing in the future: ‘Hub Airports’ that are relatively remote from conurbations, offering high throughput and quick transfer connections, and ‘Hub Cities’ where a variety of passenger demands is recognised, and a more integrated transport strategy is pursued. He  believes that London has the opportunity to pursue the latter, and become the world’s first Hub City.
