The SPG provides guidance on how to implement the housing policies in the 2011 London Plan (LP). In particular, it provides detail on how to carry forward the Mayor’s view that “providing good homes for Londoners is not just about numbers. The quality and design of homes, and the facilities provided for those living in them, are vital to ensuring good liveable neighbourhoods”. It is informed by the Government’s National Planning Policy Framework and by its Housing Strategy for England.

The Mayor has issued for public consultation draft supplementary planning guidance on ‘Use of planning obligations in the funding of Crossrail, and the Mayoral Community Infrastructure Levy’. This provides guidance on implementation of London Plan policies on the funding of Crossrail, planning obligations and the Community Infrastructure Levy. Comments are requested by 15 January 2013.

Information on day visitors has always been the weakest link in national tourism intelligence. The Great Britain Day Visitor Survey 2011 (GBDVS-11) was commissioned jointly by Visit England, Visit Scotland and Visit Wales in order to address this gap in knowledge. The online survey undertaken by TNS Research had a tourism day visitor respondent base in London of 2,990. This Current Issues Note also makes some detailed comparisons with the previous, limited data available on day visits in an attempt to isolate how the levels of day visits to London and their expenditure has varied over time. Issues raised by the survey are discussed.

Plans to extend the Northern line to Nine Elms and Battersea

Feedback is requested on Transport for London’s proposals to extend the Northern line to Nine Elms and Battersea, as part of wider plans to regenerate the Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea area. The proposals include: extension of the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line from Kennington to Battersea via Nine Elms; new stations at Nine Elms and Battersea; two permanent shafts at Kennington Green and Kennington Park to provide ventilation, cooling and emergency access if required; and two temporary shafts to enable works to stabilise the ground in preparation for the new tunnels to be built. Comments are requested by 16 December 2012.

London’s population is growing and the capital needs to build around 36,000 new homes a year just to keep pace with the number of new households. This NLA exhibition looks at how well the capital is keeping up with its targets, who is delivering new homes, the funding and policy context, exemplar projects, and new and imaginative ideas for designing and delivering new homes for London.  The exhibition, running from 31 October – 21 December 2012, takes place at NLA’s galleries at The Building Centre in WC1 and is accompanied by a publication, conference and talks, addressing the issues affecting the design and delivery of London’s homes.

Transport for London (TfL) has launched the second phase of a public consultation on a proposed package of new river crossings between east and south east London. Following an initial consultation in February 2012, TfL has further developed the proposals for new vehicle river crossings, with options including a new road tunnel at Silvertown and a vehicle ferry at Gallions Reach. Comments are requested by 1 February 2013.

A 17-strong international tutor team of practising architects, researchers in architecture and urbanism, artists, and linguists are leading this years’ Urban Transcripts workshop on the city, to be held on 3-9 December 2012. Focusing on London’s actual problematics, combining on-site visits, urban explorations, studio work and social events, the workshop is an interdisciplinary exercise in understanding the urban condition and working towards collaborative solutions. The workshop is open both to students and non-students; it will be of particular interest to students past their 2nd year of study, postgraduate students, and recent graduates, in disciplines related to the study of the city and urban intervention; notably architecture, urbanism, planning, geography, the social sciences, and the arts.
