The economic impact of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

London 2012, its build-up and subsequent legacy will generate £16.5bn of gross domestic product (GDP) for the UK’s economy, according to Lloyds Banking Group (LBG), with construction and tourism the key sectors in driving the economic boost. The report covers the period from London being announced as host city in 2005 through to 2017. In the five-year legacy period after the Games, LBG forecasts that the UK economy will be boosted by £5bn worth of games-related GDP, particularly in terms of physical infrastructure.

As part of the 2012 Learning Legacy, the Institution of Civil Engineers worked with the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) to deliver a UK-wide lecture programme. The topics covered include: master planning, land treatment, venues, bridges, structures, water use management, and transport. Videos of the following lectures are available:

Launch of the Olympic Delivery Authority’s Learning Legacy and panel discussion on the lessons learned from the London 2012 construction project.

Establishment of the Olympic Project: winning the bid, shaping the vision and master planning

Hear from those that led the complex design and planning process to ensure buildings and infrastructure were designed to meet long-term regeneration ambitions as well as the unique technical requirements for the games.

Engineering the Olympic Park: Contaminated land treatment and invasive species control

Prior to 2005 the Olympic Park site in east London was heavily polluted and divided by pylons and railways. The preparation for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games required environmental improvement on a huge scale.

Engineering the Olympic Park: Water use minimisation and management

The lecture looks at the use of modern techniques to reduce the use of water across the site and successfully manage the resource.

Engineering the Olympic Stadium

Hear from those who led the design and delivery of the Olympic Stadium. An innovative use of permanent and temporary forms was developed to meet the 80,000 Olympic capacity and 25,000 legacy capacity, with the final structuring consisting of a permanent sunken concrete bowl and a removable upper seating tier.

The Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 has published its final review before the Games. The Annual Review 2011 assures progress on sustainability across the London 2012 Programme with a focus on how the Games experience will be distinctly sustainable for different client groups.  The Commission’s review has examined a range of factors including waste, energy, food and transport. The analysis shows that the London 2012 Games have made significant achievements in these areas and many others, paving the way for long-term legacy benefits, which could help businesses, event organisers and local communities.

This event, held at the LSE, brought together some of the UK’s most distinguished architects to present their designs for the Aquatic Centre, the Velodrome and the Basketball Stadium, three of the most inventive and symbolic buildings of the Olympic Park, explaining how they have been conceived to be adapted or dismantled after the Games. The complex process behind this massive regeneration project are described by some of the principal protagonists who commissioned the buildings and public spaces, providing a social, economic and environmental context to the architecture of the Olympic Games.
