Through a series of blogs, Brent Toderian, Planning Director for Vancouver over 4 years of preparation preceding the last Olympics, aims to share his observations on the city-building challenges and legacies from the Vancouver and Calgary Olympic Games, as well as his indirect observations from London and past host cities like Barcelona, Sydney, and Montreal. He will consider the debates on whether hosting the Olympics is a good or bad thing for a city, the lessons from cities that have done it successfully, and maybe even some observations from cities that benefited from going after the Games, and not getting them.

London 2012: Lessons learned

From January to July 2012, the UK Green Building Council is holding a series of events which aim to explore a comprehensive range of sustainability themes and strategies using the London 2012 construction project as a platform for discussion and learning. The first event, held on 17 January 2012, featured the Olympic Velodrome, providing a holistic perspective on creating a sustainable venue from the entire project team – from client to architect to supplier. Presentations and a video of highlights of the event are available online. Further events cover: the acquatics centres (28 February 2012); the stadium (17 April 2012); the athletes’ village (15 May 2012); and temporary venues (19 June 2012).

Demolition waste management on the Olympic Park

This report from the Olympic Development Authority considers the lessons learned from the London Olympic Games 2012 construction project. A robust demolition methodology and process was developed which took account of health and safety, sustainability, stringent timescales and immovable programme (affecting time available for reclamation surveys), budget, storage space, and lack of existing buildings designed for deconstruction. This paper evaluates the methods and processes in place to meet the ODA’s key sustainability targets for two key stages: pre-demolition and during demolition.
