The Scottish Government has published final versions of two of its key planning documents, the National Planning Framework 3 (NPF3) and Scottish Planning Policy (SPP) http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Resource/0045/00453827.pdf . The NPF3 sets out the government’s development priorities and identifies 14 national developments and other strategically important projects. SPP, Scotland’s equivalent of England’s National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), guides how applications, development plans and appeals should be dealt with.

This tool, developed by data mapping consultancy Boilerhouse WebTools, allows users to view and update information on the progress of neighbourhood planning activity across England. Public and professionals can add and modify their own neighbourhood planning data on the map.

The DataShine mapping platform is an output from an ESRC Future Research Leaders Project entitled “Big Open Data: Mining and Synthesis“. The overall project seeks promote and develop the use of large and open datasets amongst the social science community. A key part of this initiative is the visualisation of these data in new and informative ways to inspire new uses and generate insights. Phase one has been to create the mapping platform with data from the 2011 Census. The next phases will work on important issues such as representing the uncertainty inherent in many population datasets and also developing tools that will enable the synthesis of data across multiple sources.

Local planning authorities in England will be able to assess whether a proposed development is likely to affect the country’s 4,128 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) thanks to a new simple-to-use online tool produced by Natural England. The Impact Risk Zones (IRZs) dataset is a GIS tool which maps zones around each SSSI according to the particular sensitivities of the features for which it is notified and specifies the types of development that have the potential to have adverse impacts.
