Between 2005 and the end of 2010, data was gathered and recorded on the Local Development Framework Database on the progress of various plans and documents that councils were preparing under existing planning legislation and guidance. This report presents a historic record of local plans progress as of January 2010 and an update on local plan preparation up to June 2011.

This event, organised by RICS India, aimed to share knowledge from other global cities who have already undergone or are planning for sustainable growth. The e vent considered:  funding and financing for new and retrofitted infrastructure, which includes developer tariffs and private finance initiatives/public private partnerships; developing and attracting sufficient built environment expertise to plan and deliver the infrastructure through a thriving community of built environment professionals; and the costs of planning and delivering infrastructure need to be benchmarked against competitor cities to lower the infrastructure delivery costs. Ecocity World Summit. Montreal, 22-26 August 2011

The Summit programme was organised around six interconnecting themes that explore leading edge research and showcase practical solutions that contribute to the development and management of ecocities. All speakers presented lessons from their specific area of expertise and explained how their work relates to the broad range of issues that are integrally related in the ecocity concept. Special crosscutting panels focused on the interconnections between several themes to offer a holistic view of Ecocity principles. Examples include: design of living buildings in sustainable communities; new technology for eco-infrastructure such as waste to energy facilities; planning solutions for ecomobility; economic strategies to sustain ecocities; and citizen commitment and empowerment. Abstracts of all oral presentations are available online. Content from all presentation sessions was captured in audio or video format. Details will be provided soon regarding how to access these recordings. Individual presenters’ powerpoint and slide presentations are not available through the conference web site. However, a post-conference edited volume is being compiled with presenters at the Summit being invited to present papers for consideration in a book on ecocities.

Urban morphology and the post-carbon city: 18th International Seminar on Urban Form. Montreal, 26-29 August, 2011

The International Seminar on Urban Form (ISUF)  is the international organisation of urban form for researchers and practitioners. It was inaugurated in 1994, bringing together urban morphologists worldwide.  It seeks to advance research and practice in fields concerned with the built environment. The 18th International Seminar aimed to explore the contributions of urban morphology to current debates on cities and key environmental challenges of our times. The event considered: urban morphological theory; urban morphology, planning and design; case studies of urban form around the globe; and urban morphology with regard to climate or climate change,urban mega-projects, transportation, brownfield redevelopment, walkability, health impacts, automobile suburbs, urban heritage, and the pre-carbon city. Other issues covered included: geospatial technology in urban morphology; urban form and environmental performance; and typological research and design. Over 50 full text versions of papers presented at the event are available online.

5th World Congress of Cities for Mobility. Stuttgart, 3-5 July 2011

The aim of this year’s congress was to define the concept of social space and to find solutions to the challenges of future mobility strengthening human relationships and focusing on the local scale. In contrast to the private space, public space offers a platform for communication and sojourning, a market place and a stage for urban life. This way public space transforms into social space, in which mobility plays an important but not the decisive role. Videos and presentations, together with the International Charter for Walking, are available online.

This event,. hosted by Birmingham City University in collaboration with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), set out to explore the current agenda relating to well-being, inviting a diverse audience drawn from different disciplines, sectors and organisations ranging from the environment, social, health, arts and humanities, including architects, landscape architects, health and community workers, Birmingham City Council, Dudley NHS, community and housing organisations, research councils, and universities. Delivering mixed use development in a new neighbourhood

Following the publication of the Barriers to mixed use development research for Scottish Government by Douglas Wheeler Associates, Architecture and Design Scotland have been hosting a series of workshops to look at how the barriers can be overcome at a range of scales. Two workshops have been carried out so far, focusing on the street/block and the neighbourhood. These workshops have brought professionals in finance, property development, design, planning, regeneration, transport and law together, focusing on sites in Glasgow to discuss how mixed use could be delivered, what the key priorities might be. Brighton & Hove Sustainability Checklist

From 13 July 2011, all applications to Brighton & Hove City Council that require a sustainability checklist must use the new version of the Brighton & Hove Sustainability Checklist. This is the first time a council has required developers to show how much carbon is in materials used for a scheme as well as the energy used for its operation. The 19-point sustainability checklist, also asks developers how much space will be allocated for growing food on schemes, including the number of fruit and nut trees.

A new report by the Town and Country Planning Association calls for Britain to re-discover its planning heritage in creating high quality, beautiful and inclusive places. It argues that we must re-discover and re-imagine the garden city principles if we are to overcome the stigma of building new communities that has come from too many poor developments with inadequate infrastructure provision.

It details a framework for action which will be embedded into all Council policies, programmes and services, but recognises that for the city to develop sustainably, a wider range of actions involving all individuals, organisations and sectors of the city working together is required.
