Westfield Stratford City is the first in a new series of product specification videos produced in association with Building. With over 70% of visitors to the Olympic Park passing through Stratford City, Westfield had to reduce their original delivery programme from ten to six years. In this video Westfield’s Design Director, Simon Cochrane, looks at the challenges and demands placed on the project, how the interior design concept was delivered and why Westfield chose to work with partners like SAS International.
An assessment of the effects of conservation areas on value

In 2012 English Heritage commissioned the London School of Economics (LSE) to undertake research into the effects of conservation areas on value. A statistical analysis of more than 1 million property transactions between 1995 and 2010 from the Nationwide building society and data on more than 8,000 English conservation areas found that properties in conservation areas sell for 23% more on average than houses outside conservation areas. Even when location, the kind of properties involved and other factors affecting house prices are adjusted for a premium of around 9% was still found.

RICS Small Retail Business Lease

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has launched a free small business retail lease to attract new and independent retailers into vacant high street space. The lease, developed in collaboration with the British Retail Consortium (BRC), has been devised to simplify the often complex and time-consuming process associated with commercial property leases. The new, freely available contract will enable quicker occupation of retail premises by SMEs, helping to support the independent retail sector and stimulate the British high street.
New tenure arrangements: management implications

The National Housing Federation has published a briefing paper on the management implications of the new tenure arrangements. Issues covered include: the relationship between rent levels and forms of tenure; the difference between a fixed-term tenancy and a periodic tenancy; the use of fixed-term tenancies and the length of the term; and operational issues relating to fixed-term tenancies.
